TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

About the Author

[up][up][up][up] Just to double-check, I did look-ups on the entry history and on the discussion. It was last edited in 2014 with the only other edits in 2013 as best I can tell. Our moderator, Septimus Heap, squelched a Cutlist vote on the basis that it is a trope and besides which, discussion should happen first. I argue that currently, it is not being used as a trope. It could be one, if anyone used it to state something of use, but the majority of related articles consist of "this exists in this work" with the closest this has to example tropes being cases where it's invoked in-universe to humorous effect, such as the Bojack Horseman cases where it has in-jokes buried in it, or Brooklyn Nine-Nine S 1 E 02 "The Tagger" where a police officer invents a fake entry for his report.

This obviously isn't killing the wiki, but I also don't think any effort has been made to actually make this a trope.

Slender Man Substitute was launched with five hats, no bombs, and after just five days in TLP.

It's got a self-demonstrating description that multiple people in TLP took issue with, and the examples aren't great and are overly broad (for example, The Silence from Doctor Who are listed even though they're absolutely not an example and their actual inspiration is even mentioned. Not to mention Jack Skellington is somehow an example for some reason?).

Was Slender Man such an icon that this is anything but an isolated meme? Cut with prejudice.

I personally feel that way, and any actual references can go under a ReferencedBy.Slenderman, but that would be a discussion for YKTTW.

Bubbly Blonde was just launched. It's an appearance stereotype; isn't there a moratorium on new appearance tropes while the Grand Unified Appearance Trope Clean-up finishes combing through the pre-existing list of such tropes?

Given that Slender Man Substitute is presented as a Fountain of Expies subtrope but has four markedly different "Ur Examples", three of which predate The Slender Man Mythos, it doesn't really seem to have a clear idea of what it's going for.

I feel absolutely confident in saying that Slender Man Substitute is not a trope.

Okay, that's as many people saying "send it back" as hatted it so it's safe to say it should go.

While I think there is an expy in there, I don't think that particular article should stay. It needs a major revamp, including what the hell the "Ur-Example" (i.e. what the expies are expies of in the first place) even is.

Having added to the draft when it was on the launch pad I can tell you for certain that the Marble Hornets example (which I added) IS an expy as it was originally meant to be Slenderman until they decided to take a few liberties with the character. I wasn't aware that there was more than one Ur-Example besides that because I hadn't gone back much afterward. It definitely wasn't ready for launch.

I unlaunched both Bubbly Blonde and Slender Man Substitute. I also locked the former's TLP and put a link to the cleanup thread in the comments.

[up] Does the "no new appearance tropes" rule apply to costume tropes? I'm working on a TLP about berets that, while not launch-worthy now, might be before the appearance trope thread gets done with that Sisyphean task.

Costume tropes are a form of appearance trope, yes. I would be cautious about trying to launch any more of them. One very simple way to tell you're doing it wrong is if the trope is about the article of clothing first and whatever it denotes about the character second.

[up][up] You could always run proposed appearance tropes by the Grand Unified Appearance Trope Clean-Up Thread while it's in TLP stage. I've seen that happen a couple of times before.

YMMV Cast To The Scrappy Heap was just launched. As you can see, it still has the YMMV tag in the title, and the TLP discussion was still in the middle of finalizing certain aspects, so I assume it was prematurely launched.

It also has some mistakes in the description, such as claiming that The Scrappy is a trope (it's an Audience Reaction, and therefore Not a Trope), but I can bring these up in the TLP discussion once it's unlaunched.

I may be misremembering, but I could swear that we had a moratorium on new complaining 'tropes' which should pretty much kill that page off.

[up][up] I remember we had a trope about that exact same scenario, only it was called "From Breakout to Scrappy". And we ended up cutting that one because it descended into "They're Popular, Now They Suck".

People seems overly liberal with hats.

Like this TLP that manages to have five hats. With literally no description.

Well, that one is definitely a trope (the laconic is actually very good), it's just that as you said, it cannot be considered launchable without anything that can be remotely called a decent description. Seems we have a case of people misunderstanding what giving a hat means and/or when it should be given.

On different note, we need more votes for this Monstrous Mandibles crowner. Please consider the issues raised in the comments by both sides of the debate before casting your vote(s).
