[up] Maybe. But Spec Ops: The Line was based more on the book that inspired Apocalypse Now. It wasn't based on Apocalypse Now itself.

“Forty years ago, I set out to make a personal art picture that could hopefully influence generations of viewers for years to come", wrote Coppola.

I kinda find this quoting hilarious because I feel that he should've added something like, "True, I and a lot of guys nearly went insane making said personal art picture, but hey, totally worth it."

We should probably just be thankful it's not another first-person shooter a la Call of Duty and wish the guys luck.

Destiny Chronicles

It's a 3D action RPG starring a swordsgirl looking to redeem herself after a botched initiation.

They have a demo you can check out, and a video of early gameplay.

The art's real nice, too. They're looking to release it on PC, PS4, and Switch.

Love Esquire.

It's a Harem Comedy Visual Novel with some light RPG elements from the developers of The Letter, the demo for it has some good writing and there is partial voice acting from some decent names including Kira Buckland, Natalie Hoover, and Cynthia Cranz.

Drastic Games, a studio founded by Epic Games alumni, is developing Soundfall, a UE4-powered twin-stick shooter/dungeon crawler which heavily revolves around music.

You start out as Melody, a music lover who's transported to the world of Symphonia; here, music creates everything. But not all is good— the evil Discordians are invading and want nothing more than to rip the essence of music apart and destroy Symphonia. Melody must team up with new allies in order to stop the spread of Discord across the land.

Everything in Soundfall is about the music. The combat, the enemies you fight, the loot you grab, even the levels you run through are formed from the song you choose. No two songs are the same, and neither are the places they create in this game. Drastic also promises Soundfall focuses on story as much as it does music.

The game is well and truly funded, but it's in its last hours and needs a bit of a boost to reach its stretch goals. If Soundfall tickles your fancy, pledge now and turn it up!

Oath, an action-combat MMORPG (think Tera or WildStar) from Ready-Up Studios, has just landed on Kickstarter in the past few days.

As seen in this video, the team has already created the core gameplay systems for Oath before the Kickstarter campaign, so the majority of the $35,000 goal they're seeking (the lowest amount they've calculated will get the game into closed beta) will be for content creation (3D models, UI, etc.).

DoubleShake is a 2.5D platformer by Rightstick Studios, inspired by such classic titles as Mischief Makers (as the title implies), Tomba!note , and Klonoa. Take control of Loam— a Caliko girl equipped with her people's super strength, sharp senses, and catlike reflexes (natch)— as she grabs, shakes, throws, and kicks all manner of things in an adventure to stop the sinister Agents of Chaos from plunging her home, the Caliko Archipelago, into complete... well, chaos. The game is already funded, but still has at least four more stretch goals to go. Demo available.

Genokids is a co-op hack-and-slash title from Nukefist, a two-man team in Spain. Become one of the four members of the titular band in this Devil May Cry-inspired game as they fight to stop an alien threat from liquifying humanity. Swap out their abilities to suit your playstyle and unleash Hype Mode to wreak maximum havoc. You can fight the Infinite Empire of Zenodia alone or with up to three other players locally (online play will be a stretch goal, don't worry). This one's not funded yet ($16,160 out of $35,072note  with 14 days to go at the time of this post), so it could use a push. Demo available.

Beyond Shadowgate is an upcoming Adventure Game that is a direct sequel to Shadowgate, the third game in the MacVenture series. It was originally called Themeire and is unrelated to the Beyond Shadowgate game from 1993 that came out on the Turbo-Grafx 16 CD. It's being developed by Zojoi (a company led by Dave Marsh and Karl Roelofs, who are responsible for the original game and porting the game to modern platforms, as well as developing a modernized remake) and GrahfMetal (who made the stellar Infested and Spectacle MacVenture-likes), with music by Orie Falconer (the musical artist who composed the highly atmospheric and catchy soundtrack to GrahfMetal's games), and boxart by Stephen Peringer (the artist who drew the iconic boxart for the MacVenture games and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest). We can expect a game that's over four times as large as Shadowgate with plenty of deaths and 8-bit magic with modern quality-of-life improvements, and I'm all the more hyped for it!

Link to the Kickstarter (also has the playable demo with more than a dozen rooms and about an hour of gameplay). The Kickstarter has reached one stretch goal as of this post. Trailer below:

[up] Ah, I was startled and excited for a moment there—I thought at first that this was a sequel to the modernised remake that the same company produced some years ago! I rather enjoyed that remake, and was saddened that no follow-up came of it! :(

Well, I imagine that this new game has its audience, so I hope that it proves to be to their delight!

I know I'm one of them! smile Although a followup to the more modernized remake would likely be Shadowgate VR: The Mines of Mythrok... If you like VR games and more action-oriented gameplay.

Hah, a fair point! XD

Ah, I don't think that I'd heard of that one!

But it wouldn't be what I would want, I fear: I don't currently have a VR setup, and I would be hoping for something more like the original remake—i.e. a puzzle-game, essentially.

Still, thank you for pointing it out! It's interesting to learn that it was made!

Update on Beyond Shadowgate: Two stretch goals have been reached, with the third being revealed to be based on The Mines of Mythrok I mentioned above... And now there's a fourth stretch goal! Just what kind of adventure could it be?
