Alright, so in TRS Badass Gay came up for discussion and it was agreed that there appears to big problem with the Badass X tropes in general, which needs to be sorted out until something can be ruled on for Badass Gay.
Here's a courtesy link: TRS page. And Badass page with its subtropes. You can also visit the sandbox page here.
Noted Problems include:
- Tropes are just listings of characters people thing are badass who happen to have a certain trait. (The Badass + Trait Problem)
- Badass X as a naming scheme is actually very vague and doesn't give a lot of insight into what the character trope actually is, assuming it is a trope.
- Badass X as a naming scheme proliferates the use of Badass + Trait 'tropes'.
Suggested things to do include:
- Make it a requirement that a badass character trope means a character is "badass because of a trait", or "badass in spite of a trait".
- Renaming away from the Badass X naming scheme as much as possible.
- Cut, redefine or re-purpose things that are just Badass + trait.
There are also a lot of tropes that seem to be valid character-types, but have the naming scheme 'Badass X', when there's more to the trope than that. There are also a lot of prop or event or whatever tropes that need to be gone through as well.

New crowner is attached. Didn't notice that.
Crowner hasn't moved in days. I've hollered it once or twice but nothing happened. We have a clear result, though.
The fact that it's listed in Latest Vote Catchers might have something to do with it. *Inserts long rant about the unreliability of Hollers*

I've got a question about Badass Normal, has this thread gotten to it yet?
I was recently doing some cleaning on Characters. The Lord Of The Rings and I noted that all the hobbits and Boromir are labeled Badass Normal.
So that's 5/9 of the main characters of the Fellowship. When only 4/9 have "superpowers" and only one (Gandalf) has anything that could charitably be compared to the superhero genre, is this trope even applicable to the situation?
In fact there appears to be a Badass trope attached to almost every character on that page. -_- In some cases it appears to be solely because they don't instantly die when fighting an orc one-on-one.

Oppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere.I wouldn't call the hobbits badasses. As far as Badass Normal in the LOTR goes technically magic and stuff do exist, but there is nobody who makes use of them. Not even Gandalf ever really does much with his magic amd it's not like Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli have any real superpowers or magic or anything. I'd say it's kind of meaningless in that series but would not contest it if someone insisted that it counts.

Well, I think that out of the four Hobbits, at least Sam counts as a Badass for managing to not only be brave enough to confront Shelob, but eventually defeat her.
... Come to think of it, what are we defining Badass as now, again?

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. We decided very early to table that discussion. It's going to become an issue at some point, though - that thing is frequently used as "character I find cool".
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWhich, admittedly, is a result of the past/current definition being "Rule of Cool personified", and is also the most common colloquial definition of the word when I see it off-site.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Marq FJA: That was an amazingly impressive fight, but then a few hours later he completely failed to land a blow on a crippled, bleeding orc armed only with a package of clothes.
My opinion is that none of them are Badass Normal and whatever Badass is, it probably doesn't include any of the hobbits.

Oppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere.Badass and Badass Normal will definitely need a look later, but those are probably the most troublesome things to deal with and will need a large effort to get them on track.
Sorry for jumping in hastily or if this isn't the right place to say this, but: many tropes listed in the Badass page isn't so much about badasses.
Just a few examples: Heroic Comedic Sociopath or Sociopathic Hero - they're more about being scary and insane (and, for the former, funny) than being badass, even though they may be badass. (As many kind of heroes are, anyway.) Then Glowing Eyes of Doom is about a sign of horror and not (necessarily) badassery. And Samus Is a Girl is about gender reveal and not badassery at all.
How can this be resolved?
MAX POWER KILL JEEEEEEEEWWWWWThese should be solved like any other trope misuse problem by pulling the bad entries.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBadass Abnormal B wicks cleaned.
For Badass Longhair, check out this YKTTW if you get the chance. Once that's launched we can get around to getting rid of Badass Longhair.
Badass Longhair is about wrapped up. Any particular badass trope we want to tackle next?
Also, I forgot about Badass Abnormal, but it's now done through D. Done through F.

New badass trope: Long-Dead Badass
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIsn't that just covered by Posthumous Character or something?
Badass Abnormal's links from G through Z cleaned up. (700+ pages doesn't compare to the 3000+ pages I've had to clean up for the Playing With Wiki) ...Well, almost cleaned-up, because the locked-up pages still remain.

"It's better to burn out... THAN TO FADE AWAY!"Brought it up in the locked pages edit request thread. Checking the sandbox, if no one has any better ideas or objects I'm going to bring up merging Badass Back and Offhand Backhand, though I only vaguely remember the arguments used.
Also, good work.

Badass Longhair has got a disambig in place.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDid anyone take care of Badass Gay yet?
Old TRS thread for Badass Gay.
I wonder if we need to look at Badass Israeli and Badass Longcoat.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman
That one should be discarded just for being an unclear stub.
