We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.
Open sections with inactive heralds:
- Betsyandthe Five Avengers — World Building
- Ori Doodle — Old Folks Home
- Cyto Zytokine — New Media
- Totemic Hero — Webcomics
- JHM — Music
- Parable — On-Topic Conversations
- GastonRabbit — Content Violation Discussions

I can set heralds anytime I want. Eddie doesn't have to do anything. I just haven't had much time for anything lately, due to a combination of exams, Skyrim and Dragon Age. I swear gaming is bad for me. >.>
Aaaaanyway, I'm willing to give Nocturna both forums if she can write the messages and if no one else steps forward for one of them.
I thought you were a wizard, when did you become a ninja!

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerI was not aware Eddie had dictated that particular thing to lu. And Knowing Is Half the Battle, G blah I blah Joe blah.
Also, gaming is awesome.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Giving both forums to Nocturna seems to make more sense than splitting the duties between two people assuming that the workload wasn't too heavy in the first place. I mean, that's basically what has been going on until now, correct?
Yes. Nocturna said she didn't do a lot of work.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDuties have been mostly saying hi, responding to questions, pointing people to the right thread or subforum, giving crash courses in TV Tropes History 101, and telling younger Tropers to get offline until they've finished their homework.
For reference to lu's question, the Septimusverse doesn't have any ninjas. I am a wizard boy regardless, and that trait isn't mutually exclusive with ninjaing.
Now back on topic. I'll look into the empty list:
- Comics: Fantasy Liver applied in @810, but it was remarked in @832 that they don't participate much.
- Forum Games: Game Spazzer applied in @826 and Classifiedzerogoki in @706.
- Mod Jabberings: I think something like "Welcome to Supersecret Mod Jabberings, junior mod. This is the place where we plan the takeover of the world, the TV Tropes policy and other sensitive matters.[Links to various threads]" is an option. And since I don't really see much traffic there, it's something lu127 or some other moderator could easily handle - is there some kind of "mod teacher" or has everybody got to figure things out by themselves?
- Projects: I think Nocturna was going to apply.
- Trope Talk: If it's possible to pull double duty, I'll see if I can come up with something.
- Wild Mass Guessing: I actually don't think that should have a forum (WMG are things, not discussions), but again not the right thread.
- All the other things: We might try the OTC approach - make an herald applications thread for each of these subfora.
Yeah, I'm intending to apply for Projects. I have an assignment due tomorrow, though, so I don't have time to write up drafts at the moment.
If Forum Games herald isn't picked yet, I might apply for it.
Suddenly realized we were on page 35 and so it was time for me to re-post this:
Re-posting some things to make them easier to findnote :
This is the link to the list of which forums have and have not been assigned. It also has links to existing heralds' messages.
Here is a link to the forum rules.
And this is a current, updating list of those drafts which have been proposed but not accepted or rejected. Stars indicate that the person has confirmed that they are still interested in and available for the position.
- All Media Recommendations: Jimmmyman 10*
- Visual Arts: Mr AHR

- Forum Games:

Is this one of those posts that should get attached to the top of the thread so that people can easily view it?
Yes please, that would be a good idea.
Only problem with that is that only the first post can be pinned to the top, and then I won't be able to edit the post anymore.
Can't it be unhooked and then rehooked as the status changes? If we attached it today and Jimmmyman became the recommendation herald tomorrow, then is there anything stopping us from updating it like that afterward? Seems like there ought to be a way to get around that.

The mods can edit a pinned post.
Oh? In that case it doesn't sound like there would be any problem. Whenever Lu made someone a herald she'd briefly update the pinned post.
Well, as stated above, if it's possible to apply for two fora, I submit myself with this message for Trope Talk:
This forum, as the name says, is for general discussion about tropes. Questions about how Trope X is distinct from Trope Y, chat about examples for a given trope, discussion of trope families, this sort of thing.
Many of these things can spawn short-term threads, so it's OK to start new threads for minor things. There are also four super-threads:
- Is this an example?: When you want to know whether something is an example, and how to write it up well.
- Redirect Farming: A topic for more expert people, to find searchable redirects for tropes that need them.
- What index(es) should this go on?: When you have a page without an index and can't find an index yourself. It covers any sort of page, not just tropes.
- What's Your Most Recently Launched Article?: This one lists pages (tropes, works etc.) that people recently created and want to list.
Of course, the general rules apply here as anywhere else. Additionally, these three topics don't go in Trope Talk:
- Trope proposals go into YKTTW.
- If you are searching for a trope, head over to Lost And Found.
- If you want to fix or repair a trope, please use Trope Repair Shop.
Got any other questions? Just send me back a message. Have fun.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAlso, Discar's PM needs Special Efforts changed to Short Term Project.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanOkay, here are my drafts:
Short Term Projects:
Projects: Short Term is the place to organize and participate in large-scale efforts to improve the wiki which only involve a few pages and have a definite end. For anything more complicated, please see the Projects: Long Term/Perpetual subforum. If you're thinking of starting a thread here, please check the long-term thread directory to ensure that you aren't creating a duplicate.
If, in the course of your cleanup, you come across a locked page which needs something fixed, add a post to this thread requesting the needed change. If a thread, a page, or a post needs some other sort of mod attention, use the yellow button (called the Holler button) which can be found at the top of each post.
This forum follows the general forum rules. If you want to rename a trope or think the description or definition needs sigificant revision, post in the Trope Repair Shop (TRS). If you are having problems with a specific troper, report the situation either by hitting the Holler button or by posting in Ask The Tropers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or any of the other staff.
Thank you for your help, and have a nice day!
Long Term Projects:
Projects: Long Term/Perpetual is the place to organize and participate in large-scale efforts to improve the wiki which involve a multitude of pages or have no foreseeable end. The thread directory lists the ongoing long-term threads with a brief description of what they cover. For short-term cleanup projects, please see the Projects: Short Term subforum.
If you haven't already, I would recommend reading Text-Formatting Rules, Example Indentation, and How To Alphabetize Things, as they contain useful information for handling some of the more technical parts of improving the wiki. Welcome To TV Tropes also contains a lot of useful information, and has a lot of links to pages with more detailed information.
If, in the course of your cleanup, you come across a locked page which needs something fixed, add a post to this thread requesting the needed change. If a thread, a page, or a post needs some other sort of mod attention, use the yellow button (called the Holler button) which can be found at the top of each post.

Two comments:
- The directory should be linked from the short term PM. The main point after all is to stop people from making short term threads when their issues are covered by the long-term topics.
- Know The Staff needs namespacing.
- It is. Final sentence, second paragraph.
- Done.
- Blasted phone - never possible to see everything needed.
- Thanks. I specifically pointed this out 'cuz most messages don't care about namespacing.
2. I generally do care, but I reused that paragraph from my Special Efforts PM, the original form of which pre-dates Know the Staff being namespaced, and I didn't even think about checking.

Those two are plugged in.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - Fighteer
I think you want "Lulu" rather than "Eduardo etcetera".
I always see my herald duties at being a good example of posting and at answering questions from newcomers (and occasionally reminding them that I don't answer questions like "Why was I banned?")
