So, I'm finding myself comparing Crystal to another long time series that had an adaptation in the 90's (as a OVA rather than a tv series, but still) then got a more recent adaptation that was Truer to the Text.
I gotta ask, what is Jojo doing right that Moon did wrong here?
One Strip! One Strip!I would have guessed it was because those OVAs only covered the one "season" to begin with, but I've heard that "covering new ground" wasn't enough to make the new Berserk anime work.
Cross posting from the Jojo thread:
I haven't seen a thing work so well with Sailor Moon since someone synched the original Attackon Titan opening to Moon Pride.
Seriously, it works so well.
One Strip! One Strip!Yeah, maybe... Did that sequence always take a full minute, or did that video slow it down?
I don't think I was even aware that new dub clips were posted a month ago!
@Demetrios: The Doom Phantom was trying to destroy the Earth, so it wouldn't exist anymore if he had his way, and I'm pretty sure the "Silence" that Master Pharoah 90 was trying to cause would have the same effect. Nehelenia probably would have turned all the people into Lemures/Remless (I'm not sure which one is the correct spelling) like she did to the people who used to serve her. With Galaxia, my guess is that the Earth itself would still exist, but all living beings would be dead from having their Star Seeds taken.
Queen Beryl is the one I'm not quite sure about, though. My guess is that she would create a world-wide dictatorship with herself as world ruler alongside a brainwashed Endymion, if she had her way. However, since she ended up being under the control of Metaria (sp?), I don't remember exactly if Metaria was trying to rule the world or destroy it, so it might go either way with her.
And to clarify, I'm basing this off of the 90s anime versions of each Big Bad, not the manga/Crystal versions (I'm guessing that's what you were referring to, but I wanted to make that clear, since the villains have some major differences when looking at different versions).

Manga!Metaria's brief peaking of power during the finale of the first arc resulted in a Hate Plague spreading across Earth and affecting every single human her malign influence reached, causing them to violently attack each other (presumably any resulting deaths were Ret-Gone'd away by the Silver Crystal's power). Assuming that humans may very well be not the only victims of said Hate Plague, her victory would've ultimately resulted in Earth becoming a barren wasteland.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.I want to think if Master Pharaoh 90 or Sailor Galaxia did leave planets intact, they might be populated by pod people.
In apropos of nothing, remember the Canadian dub that brought forth the "Makoto bragging about her 'talents'" scene?
Why did they do nothing but redub it? They didn't even take out the "bbbbooooiinggg" sound.
Edit: Also, why is the voice acting so bad?

Trans rights are human rights. TV Tropes is not a place for bigotry, cruelty, or dickishness, no matter who or their position.I would say something about how I didn't think it was bad, but seeing as I'm in the minority with this when it comes to 99.99999999999% of anime, I see no point in bothering.
To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."I haven't seen as much Sailor Moon as I would like, but would you guys call Minako and Rei particularly close in the 90s anime? I always saw Minako as playing second fiddle to Usagi in the anime. Minako/Rei is a popular ship even in the 90s anime fandom and I'm stumped on whether that works or not. Friendship wise, how close are they compared to everyone else?
From what I remember, in the 90's anime, Minako probably gets more episodes focusing on her friendship and conflicts with Makoto than with Rei (for the 90's anime fandom, probably Rei/Usagi is a more common pairing, because of their bickering tsundere-ish friendship in that version). A lot of the evidence people use for pairing them up comes more from the manga, where Rei and Minako have a short story focusing on them (the one where Minako disguises herself as a student of Rei's school for a day because she's jealous of Rei going to an elite school and especially not having any entrance exams), plus, they have some moments in the Stars manga that are seen as shipping fuel. The live-action TV show also adds more emphasis to Rei and Minako's relationship, too.

What about Ami/Makoto shipping? Does anyone know if there's something in particular in the manga and/or first anime that could've led to the genesis of this pairing?
PS: I think Ami/Makoto is an adorable couple. It has more to do with the height difference and Makoto being an action-oriented girly tomboy to Ami's intellectually oriented straight-up girly girl, than it is to do with Makoto having the biggest chest among the main cast (though it's a definite plus).
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Personally speaking, I really don't care much for these fan-made pairings. Minako/Rei in particular is one that I find very forced. For one thing I never saw the chemistry between them, in any version. The likes of Ami/Makoto and Rei/Usagi work much better as platonic IMO.
I'm sorry, but I find the 'evidence' for stuff like that very flimsy. It doesn't help that yuri/yaoi blurs the line between proper homosexuality, and fetishism. Haruka/Michiru is the only same-sex couple I recognize. And that holds true for all 'official' ones. Until the likes of Naoko or Toei says otherwise, it doesn't exist beyond the realms of fanfiction as far as I am concerned.
In all fairness, I probably wouldn't mind so much if Shippers weren't so damn obnoxious, and persisted in trying to force their OTP on me as canon. While screaming out profanities like 'homophobe'...
Frankly I've never really understood the point or appeal of shipping in general. Certainly not to the point where I would fall out with someone over it in one of those tedious online wars. Supporting your favorite couple doesn't make it any more or less real.

Speaking as an Ami/Mako shipper, it's one of those ships that I don't think anyone has ever said that it has any sort of canon support and it's the character dynamics that draw most people to it and make them think "they'd make a good/interesting couple".
As for Rei/Minako... there's not really anything in the first anime, but the live action series has some definite subtext between the two. Especially when the two start wielding each others swords towards the end of the series.
Wasn't there an episode in the original anime where Ami asked Makoto out to dance?
Your preferences are not everyone else's preferences. If there is I either can't remember it or it was in SuperS or Stars.
I mean there was the one episode in the first season where Mako inadvertently gave Ami a panty shot as well... but that was just a sight gag (the episode with the cat that has one oft the Rainbow Crystals in case anyone was wondering. Ami, Usagi and Makoto are trying to attack Zoicite in a narrow alley but keep tripping each other... hence Ami getting a free show).
The dance scene exists, yes. There's a screenshot in Sailor Moon's Effortless Amazonian Lift entry, and this is a video clip of the scene (albeit with painfully obvious desynchronization between the video and the audio).
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. The episode number means SuperS... which is why I haven't seen it.
Damn. My memory was faulty. I could have sworn it was the other way around. Well it just goes to show how long it's been since I watched it.
ReiMina is much more popular than UsaRei even in the 90s anime fandom. Trust me, I've looked. That's why I was asking. There's so much Reimina but I thought that was pretty nonexistent in the 90s continuity.
I'm pretty certain Makoami spawned due to the dancing scene. They're just so cute together, plus there's no one else to Pair the Spares with.

ReiMina might be at least partially a reference to the Greek gods Aphrodite/Venus and Ares/Mars being... you know, lovers.
I've also seen at least one fic that has MakoMina as a ship, albeit kinda in the background. The main ship of that story was Ranma/Hotaru, for the curious.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus."As for Rei/Minako... there's not really anything in the first anime, but the live action series has some definite subtext between the two. Especially when the two start wielding each others swords towards the end of the series. "
Oh yes, I am familiar with the Live Action Series. And I still find it forced there as well I'm afraid. Not helped by the fact that the actresses (especially the one for Minako) had no real onscreen chemistry with each other.
I'm actually more surprised Ami/Rei didn't get more popular. What with that episode in the later half where they basically spent the night together, dressed up, partied like they were high on ecstacy, and fell asleep on each other shoulders. It's been a while since I watched it, but I remember thinking that scene was just dripping with Yuri-bait. Especially when taken out of context.

Mileena Madness
@Marq: Not quite yet, but she did punch out an enemy monster that was immune to physical attacks with pure guts and strength alone in the current season. In base form.
