I'm here, just busy freaking out over the whole problem about Trump being president. And that underwater theme park that Nickelodeon wants to build in Palawan—NOT COOL.

As for Filipino related news, I'm taking a Pacific Islander history class and as of the first week (really two days) our Filipino professor seems super awesome.

Also, I've always lightweight noticed the differences between "island-born Filipinos" and "Filipino-Americans" seeing as my mother's side of the family immigrated here, but since I've been getting into indigenous Filipino culture and social-justice-warrioring, it's REALLY evident that Filipino-Americans really want to find our indigenous roots, but island-born Filipinos are really, really Westernized.

And then when we call them out about the island-born problems like prejudice towards indigenous tribes or glorifying light skin (and the related "glorifying mixed-race Caucasians/East-Asians who don't look very Filipino"), they blame everything on being colonized by Spain/America/Japan and say we need to talk nicer if we want people to listen to us. And the ones who claim to be decolonized seem to only be doing it so they can swoop in and say "I'M NOT COLONIZED, BRUH, YOU SHOULDN'T GENERALIZE US LIKE THAT."

Like... it's almost hilarious how the islanders ARE Westernized, because they act exactly like privileged white people who get upset at the slightest criticism.

So...., in the past year, other than Duterte, the Marcos Burial, the de Lima-gate, what are your thoughts on other great and significant things that happened on the past year. Like The MMFF showing more great films while omitting "Oro" from the list, and Miss Universe.

In my opinion, I find the Encantadia reboot not capturing the charm of the original.

In my own honest opinion, it's official. The Encantadia reboot completely Jumped the Shark.

It ain't interesting without Hagorn and Pao Pao anymore, and they've been dragging the show with loose threads and unnecessary subplots and characters.

Things have taken an interesting turn since I last posted in this thread. I started writing a Pinoy-American Urban Fantasy novella The Crocodile God and entered it in a book writing contest, so here's hoping I win their $10,000 grand prize and publication, or get in the top five and "only" get a shot at publication.

I'll find out what happens in March since there's a lot of contestants and all our excerpts are 20-30 pages each. Wish me luck, guys!

Also, to anyone in this thread. What are your opinions on federalism?

I feel like federalism has both good and bad points—centralized legal standards are good, but too strong of a federal government leads to the shitstorm that is the current state of the US. I have no idea of the federalism issues in the islands, though.

Also, didn't realize the Filipino media page included diaspora works, so I added The Crocodile God. The media page is a lot longer than I thought it would be!

As a native Aklanon, I am saddened, and pissed off, by the status of Boracay, and how it was exploited.

So, I don't know if this thread is dead or not, but how are things? It's great that for the past six months that Boracay closed, the streets at night where I live sounded tranquil. Now that it reopened, things are back to normal at least. That cleanup sure made Boracay better, so I heard.

Speaking of cleanup, Manila Bay seems to be on a huge cleanup drive. How's the progress?

It's a bit cleaner now. Well, not as clean as anyone wanted, but it's getting there. However, some find the timing for the cleanup hype a bit suspicious. Because a few days later, it was discovered that a part of Manila Bay is scheduled for reclamation. Meaning, artificial islands will be built there to build new structures for the rich, as always.

Hey, since I've seen a bunch of pages like The Grand List of Console Role Playing Game Clichés and the Evil Overlord List, maybe I can help set up a list that lists classic Filipino action movie cliches, since most (or even all of them) can correspond to a particular trope.

The list is from Bob Ong's "Bakit Baligtad Magbasa ng Libro ang Pilipino?", and I've already translated it myself years back.
