Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Admittedly, I'm still wondering why there's so many Hulk characters in this Captain America movie. Thunderbolt Ross makes sense. The Leader sounds awesome. But...Betty Ross?

[up][up]She is Thunderbolt Ross's daughter. Maybe that's why she shows up. Or she's trying to help Sterns after his mutation.

I just mean that Betty hasn't gotten any focus since 2008, and didn't even have any set-up to appear in future installments like Sterns did. So it's quite a surprise to bring her out of the blue.

It does lead to speculation that Hulk might be in this

If Hulk was going to be in this I don't see why they wouldn't be telling us.

Unless they have. Unfortunately Red Hulk seems likely, possibly as a stinger.

Presumably the normal supporting cast and rogues gallery for Captain America are too goshdarn "political" for neoliberal Disney to touch and so they're importing Hulk villains instead.

If Ross is up to something nefarious, Betty makes sense as - once again - being an "in" the heroes have who has Ross' trust but is on their side.

[up] Ah. Thinking about it, I guess that's why we never got a follow-up on the Hydra remnant glimpsed at in Ant Man 1?

Assuming that they're intentionally omitting Cap's more political villains rather than just choosing not to use them for any myriad of other reasons seems like just that: an assumption.

We have no reason to assume they have any malice towards Cap's more political enemies. Given that basically every Marvel movie now has crossover villains rather than the characters' own rogues, it's not surprising that Cap does to.

What if they changed the title of the movie so they didn't get sued by the WWE.

Chris Hemsworth admits that Thor: Love and Thunder was "too silly":

"I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly," Hemsworth said about the movie. "It's always hard being in the center of it and having any real perspective... I love the process, it's always a ride. But you just don't know how people are going to respond."

Hemsworth said his biggest critics were his son's friends. "It's a bunch of eight-year-olds critiquing my film. 'We thought this one had too much humor, the action was cool but the VFX weren’t as good,'" he said. "I cringe and laugh equally at it."

It's good to see he can take the critiques in good humor and admit the film's shortcomings. It's clear he still wants to play Thor, but he'll probably take some of the lessons from Love and Thunder going forward.

Yeah, I think he's looking to find a good way to finally retire the role while still paying tribute to what Thor is as well.

It also kinda sucks that Hemsworth really wants to work with Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino, but that he probably won't get to do it because of their distaste for the MCU.

I don't see why he can't. Samuel L. Jackson has been in both Tarantino movies and MCU movies.

Yeah, but Jackson did Tarantino before he did MCU.

Though I don't think that should matter unless Tarantino says he won't work with anyone who did those movies or something.

SLJ's been in Tarantino's Production Posse since long long before the MCU was a thing though. It doesn't necessarily work in reverse.

On the other hand, Anna Paquin did play a small role in The Irishman, long after the X-Men movies had wrapped up. So maybe there's still a chance for him to get involved with Scorsese.

Not the MCU v Scorsese thing again. Marty will hire him if his vibe and talent fit his work, and not doing so doesn't equate to bias against the MCU or cape stuff. His last film before Irishman starred post-Spidey pre-EGOT nominee Andrew Garfield.

Directors and actors understand that they work inside a system, and they can dislike parts of the system without disliking each other.

There are probably plenty of actors who think Zach Snyder, just to pick a random example, doesn't always direct the best movies, but who still want to work with him because he's known as a respectful, warm and above all professional person who values the people working with him.

Scorsese can think the MCU is a soulless example of the juggernaut studios rolling over smaller movies without having an irrational dislike for any of the production crews involved.

It's usually only inane fans who think "so and so worked for DC, now they'll never do an MCU movie", which has been proven time and time again to be untrue.

And with James Gunn in charge of DC now, there's likely to be even more Marvel-DC intersection in the coming future.

I've never watched any Zack Snyder movies, but it's pretty fascinating how there's such a Fandom Rivalry between fans of his work and people who don't care for it, and yet creators like working with him and Snyder himself seems like a pretty okay guy.

Plus, it's not like Scorsese even hates superheroes as a genre, he's said he finds them perfectly well-made, he just doesn't think they're on the same level as "cinema" films.

Coppola did express explicit hatred of the genre, though. With Tarantino I'm not sure what his exact thoughts on the genre are, though Kill Bill does have a famously inaccurate interpretation of the Superman/Clark Kent dynamic, so it's possible he's okay with the genre but not all that familiar with it.
