YMMV / The Vampire Lovers

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Why did Carmilla attempt to spirit a dying Emma away to Castle Karnstein's ruins? Was it a bid to preserve her intended victim for future feeding, now waxing scrutiny and Renton's murder had made a longer sojourn at Emma's estate untenable? Or might she have been genuinely in love with Emma, perhaps even plotting to turn her into a vampire?
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: The picture is known as the definitive Lesbian Vampire film and turned Ingrid Pitt into a British sex symbol in The '70s.
  • First Installment Wins: Widely seen as the most well-remembered of the "Karnstein Trilogy", the film's loose sequels, Lust for a Vampire and Twins of Evil, are widely regarded as inferior.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of the General's guest at the party is wearing a uniform similar in design and color scheme to the costume that Steve Rogers would wear as the Captain and John Walker would wear as U.S.Agent
  • Jerkass Woobie: Throughout the film, Mircalla preys on several innocent people, and shows a willingness to dispose of others once they have outlived their usefulness to her. However, depending on how charitably one assesses her motivations, and specifically whether or not she had genuine love for Emma, she could be seen as a closeted lesbian who can ultimately never have romantic female companionship due to her vampiric condition, and due to it not being socially acceptable at the time. See Tragic Monster on the main page.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Ties in with Best Known for the Fanservice above, but the main draw of the film is to see Ingrid Pitt get naked and engage in some light lesbian activity. The filmmakers themselves seemed to be fully aware of this, and made use of it in their promotion for the film.
