YMMV / The Simpsons S 34 E 6 Treehouse Of Horror XXXIII

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The "Death Tome" segment transplants the Simpsons into an anime-version of their world and does so rather well, as the studio who helped produce the original Death Note anime gave some assistance.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: In Simpsonsworld, the hedge somehow was able to kill the tourists. No explanations as to why it was lethal or in a public space that could get others killed was offered, it just does.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In "Death Tome" Lisa writes that Burns should suffer a peaceful death... only to keel over face-first onto a grill, then spill hot coals into his crotch when he's pulled up. The cherry on top is Lisa's embarrassed smile.
  • Fanfic Fuel: There's a number of fans that love the idea of the Death Tome requiring every kill to be via a unique method, and retroactively wish that Death Note could've explored the idea itself.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: For some anime fans, they are likely watching this episode just for the Death Note parody being done in part by the original animators of Death Note.
  • Magnificent Bastard: In this Affectionate Parody of Death Note, Lisa Simpson inherits all of Light's cunning while remaining legitimately well-intentioned. Upon finding Steve Johnson's Death Tome, Lisa sets about saving the world, first saving a cat from a criminal by causing said criminal to have a heart attack, before making Mr. Burns die in his sleep to stop his Global Warm plan. Next she kills all of Global Warm's employees in increasingly creative and unique ways. Lisa figures out that Bart is the mysterious "L" by recognizing his handwriting and then tricks Steve into letting his guard down so she can kill him and be free of the Death Tome when she realizes she has gone too far.
  • Moe: Anime Lisa in the "Death Tome" segment looks adorable. Even when she's committing murder.
  • Older Than They Think: "Death Tome" isn't the first time that The Simpsons have parodied Death Note. The spinoff comic series also did a parody of the Death Note manga 14 years priornote , which portrayed Bart as Light and Krusty as Ryuk.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: "The Pookadook" is still seen as a good segment, but certainly a lot more straightforward, slow-paced and traditional compared to the radical presentation shakeup of "Death Tome" and the action-packed meta commentary of "Simpsonsworld".
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: "Treehouse of Horror XXXII" was generally seen as underwhelming, and a disappointing part of a season that was otherwise generally praised for being a bit of a renaissance for the show. "XXXIII" by contrast was immediately praised for being one of the most fun and well-rounded modern-era Treehouse of Horror episodes ever, especially when viewed as a double feature with ""Not It"".
  • The Woobie: Poor little Maggie who is scared out of her mind throughout "The Pookadook" segment, especially when Marge tries to murder her several times while possessed by the Pookadook.
