YMMV / The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again

Go To

  • Broken Base: Let's be frank here, this is a remake of one of the most beloved cult films of the 20th century. It's guaranteed to get a lot of mixed responses, assuming one even cares about it enough to have an opinion, and the responses for it have been all over the map, from liking it to loathing it to just thinking it's okay in its own right. The one thing everyone agrees on is that it could never hope to top the original.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Tim Curry's first appearance on screen in the movie, which was his first appearance onscreen in any movie since his near-fatal stroke in 2012, is met with a standing ovation by the onscreen audience.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: People who don’t like the remake will usually admit that Laverne Cox, Adam Lambert, and Christina Milian played their parts very well. Also Tim Curry's participation was a big draw as well.
  • Narm: The way Victoria Justice shouts "Stop" during "Planet Schmanet Janet". She sings it.
  • Older Than They Think: Many amateur productions of the show have changed Frank into a woman, trans or cis, before this remake and have been similarly controversial.
  • Tear Jerker: Whereas the original movie had the Criminologist coldly intone the final lines, in this version, the Criminologist sings them. Having the original Frank-N-Furter eulogize his successor is quite poignant.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A revival of a show written during (and reflecting on) the sexual revolution of the late 60s and early 70s being staged in an era when the much wider LGBTQ+ spectrum is being recognized sounds fascinating. Unfortunately, it's just a Shot-for-Shot Remake which ignores the fact that there even was a stage show first, complete with elements that were exclusive to the movie such as Rocky's muteness and the way Columbia dies. The Usherette is the only new element lifted from the original show and, outside of the controversial casting of a transgender woman as Frank, does nothing to update the story to reflect on the times. It's obvious that the special is just capitalizing on the nostalgia of the film rather than reinventing it for The New '10s.
  • Trans Audience Interpretation: Some fans wonder if Frank is meant to be a transgender woman in-universe like her actress, Laverne Cox. Especially when she sings about being a Sweet Transvestite.
