YMMV / The Other Woman (2014)

Go To

  • Designated Hero: Lydia, the Token Evil Teammate of the group. In a sense she's worse than Mark because while he was a sleazy criminal, he was only white-collar; he never tried to physically harm anyone, let alone the protagonists.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: After Carly meets Kate's brother, she expresses some interest in him. This leads to a scene in which Kate calls Carly "greedy" since Carly is already Mark's mistress. Carly points out that this is okay since Phil is Kate's brother and not some guy Kate is romantically involved with. A bit hilarious considering that Kate's husband is the Kingslayer from Game of Thrones who is infamous for his fling with his sister.
  • Hollywood Homely: The gorgeous Leslie Mann dolled herself down a bit to play the role of the cuckolded wife.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: It's highly likely that most people (especially guys) who saw this movie did so for the presence of Kate Upton, Leslie Mann, Cameron Diaz and/or Nicki Minaj. The possibility of Game of Thrones fans supporting Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also cannot be ruled out.
  • Les Yay: Between the three leads, obviously. Just look at the poster.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Mark committing international fraud in Kate's name so that he can get away with it while Kate goes to prison instead. He was a run-of-the-mill sleazeball until this fact was revealed and turned him into someone truly despicable.
  • Questionable Casting: Many critics felt that Kate Upton's casting was a case of the producers going for a "flavor of the month" casting over someone especially suited to the role — an accusation that was brought up again years later when it transpired that Margot Robbie, who would go on to become one of the most acclaimed actresses of The New '10s, had very nearly been cast instead of Upton, but lost out because she wasn't considered well-known enough (The Wolf of Wall Street, which became her breakout role, hadn't yet been released when they were casting for this film).

  • Squick: Mark's broken nose during his Villainous Breakdown at the very end of the film. There's just so much blood.
  • Tear Jerker: The scene in the Bahamas where Kate throws her engagement and wedding rings into the ocean. It's a pretty sombre moment in a movie where most of her reactions to Mark cheating on her have been Played for Laughs. Then Carly and Amber show up to wordlessly comfort her.
