YMMV / The Brood Saga

Go To

  • Character Rerailment: Chris Claremont's continued efforts to save Carol Danvers from the disastrous events of the Marcus storyline from The Avengers continues here after starting her What the Hell, Hero? speech given to her former teammates in Avengers Annual #10. Not only has her Badass Normal bonafides been established in issues here with the X-Men, but she takes charge alongside Wolverine to save the X-Men from the Brood and has her powers super-charged into Binary, making her one of the most powerful figures in the Marvel Universe on par with the Silver Surfer or Thor.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • No effort is made to hide the Brood's inspiration by Alien, with Chris Claremont throwing in as many references to the movie as possible since Kitty Pryde (herself designed by John Byrne to look like an adolescent Sigourney Weaver) escaping a clear Xenomorph in her first adventure as an X-Men recruit. Where this trope comes into play is in regards to Aliens, which came out four years after this story and featured several similar plot points. For starters, it features the protagonists' second confrontation with the Xenomorph-expies with a Badass Crew trying to stay alive in an enclosed space and learning that the already dangerous enemies are led by a massive and unstoppable queen. Though it's unlikely that James Cameron was inspired by this story in his sequel it is funny that was largely an homage ended up presaging several elements of the original film's follow-up.
    • Piotr's line in #163, "I fear this may prove to be the X-Men's last stand." No Colossus, that won't come for another twenty-four years.
