  • Americans Hate Tingle: While the film got widely positive reviews in most countries, UK film reviewers were far more critical, due to Diana being such a massive cultural icon and Sacred Cow in the country that any media depicting her has a massive uphill struggle from the get-go (to the point where the country's tabloid media demanded that Netflix end The Crown before it could get to the point where Diana was alive, and became far more hostile to the series when they didn't), and anything that depicts her in an even remotely unflattering manner is considered a massive no-no.
  • Award Snub: After spending much of the run-up to awards season as the frontrunner for Best Actress, Stewart lost the Golden Globe to Nicole Kidman for Being the Ricardos, was snubbed entirely by the SAG Awards (which Jessica Chastain won for The Eyes of Tammy Faye), causing even some of Stewart's detractors to be taken aback. She also lost the Academy Award to Chastain.
  • Awesome Music: Jonny Greenwood provides a typically brilliant score, alternately beautiful and nerve-fraying.
  • Critical Dissonance: While critics generally enjoyed the movie and raved about Stewart, it was not a hit with general audiences, averaging a 50% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • Fandom Rivalry:
  • Heartwarming Moments: Any scene involving both Diana and Maggie qualifies, especially considering that she's one of the only people that gives Diana the emotional support she needs.
    • The scene with Diana and her children in the middle of the night on Christmas morning shows us Diana's tender, caring side.
  • Memetic Mutation: The close-up shot of an emotional Diana stumbling down the hallway became exploitable online.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Christmas Eve dinner. Up until now, Diana had seemed grounded, if a bit stressed, but here we understand just what sort of state she's in. She hallucinates the ghost of Anne Boleyn sitting next to Charles, imagines herself tugging at her pearl necklace until it falls into her soup...and then eats the pearls with the soup, complete with gags and grimaces. As she eats more and more, the music grows louder and more nightmarish by the second, until we (blessedly) find out it was just a particularly intense Imagine Spot.
  • Spiritual Successor: As both are about a dysfunctional English royal family falling apart at the seams during a Christmas celebration, some have compared this film to The Lion in Winter
  • She Really Can Act: Kristen Stewart has been gradually earning goodwill in indie movies over the past decade, but even her biggest fans were surprised by just how well she did as Princess Diana.
  • The Woobie: Princess Diana gets put through the emotional wringer in this film. Not only is there pressure for her to conform to tradition but that combined with the lack of emotional support from everyone (except for Maggie and Diana’s children) causes her to undergo Sanity Slippage along the way.
