• Retroactive Recognition:
  • A young Daniel Day-Lewis plays a small role as a DJ in "The Farmer Had a Wife."
  • Margaret Billington from "The Mayfly Dance" is played by Brenda Cowling, who would later be best known for playing Mrs. Lipton in You Rang, M'Lord?.
  • Brian Kelson from "The Partnership" is played by David Griffin, who would later be best known for playing Clive Dempster in Hi-de-Hi! and Emmet Hawksworth in Keeping Up Appearances.
  • Gary Molecombe from "Find the Lady" is played by Gary Holton, who would later be best known for playing Wayne Norris in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.
  • Tom Clarke from "Higher Ground" is played by Gorden Kaye, who would later be best known for playing René Artois in 'Allo 'Allo!.
  • Taff from "The Dangerous Game" is played by Eric Richard, who became better known as The Bill's Sergeant Cryer.
• Spiritual Predecessor: When Trevor Eve left the series, the production team created Bergerac as a replacement. Both shows are about an eccentric Defective Detective who has recently recovered from a breakdown, and both shows are set in different parts of the British Islands (the west of England for Shoestring, Jersey for Bergerac).
