YMMV / Pokémon Gold (Fanmade)

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Whitney is very popular for being a tremendously strong trainer, who's enjoyably smug when her Miltank mops the floor with a trainer, but also surprisingly chill and kind when she's off the clock. And she's also Ms. Fanservice. According to Word of God, her popularity even gave a boost to the series' views.
  • I Knew It!:
    • Someone figured out Gold and Whitney would become a couple as soon as Whitney was first mentioned in the series.
    • It was also guessed that the series will make nods to Pokémon Gold-related creepypastas. Sure enough, Episode 17 makes a Whole-Plot Reference to Pokémon Lost Silver.
    • Someone commented that Kris's Slowpoke will evolve into Slowking to Throw the Dog a Bone. Come Episode 22, and Slowpoke does indeed evolve into Slowking... but rather than via trade, he evolves via a Fusion Dance with Kris's Shellder, something nobody expected.
    • When May was revealed to have caught Rayquaza, people started believing she'll appear as a Deus ex Machina in the battle for the Goldenrod Radio Tower. Sure enough, that ended up being the case.
    • Some people expected Gold's Eevee to evolve into Umbreon to help with the former's parallel towards Red. This was proven true in Episode 32.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Silver is mean to both people and Pokémon, but he has an utterly heartbreaking reason to be so: he was the son of Giovanni, the ruthless boss of Team Rocket, and witnessed the team murder countless Pokémon in cold blood for money and abuse countless other Pokémon for power, and after seeing firsthand the full extent of his father's evil, he could take it no more; he disowned his father and ran into hiding in Johto.
    • Ariana is a criminal and suffers from a nasty case of Aesop Amnesia, since she kept Team Rocket alive against Giovanni's wish. She's also a mother desperately trying to find her missing husband, son, and daughter. She even gets a brief Hope Spot when Silver comes back to her, but then witnesses him ultimately choose to fight against Team Rocket - and therefore against her - during the climactic battle.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Outside of the gag of Whitney using Attract on Gold, while her Miltank is spamming the same move against his Pokémon, there aren't real clues that Whitney or Gold are developing romantic feelings for each other while fighting before their Big Damn Kiss in Episode 14.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Episode 20 shows that Jasmine is best friends with May (the female protagonist from Ruby and Sapphire). Nobody saw that coming.
    • Episode 29 not only brings May into the battle thanks to Jasmine, but the main characters from Diamond and Pearl arrive to help the Gen 2 characters fight Team Rocket. That alone shocked the viewers, but in a good way.
    • Episode 31 brings in a young version of Lyra (Kris' counterpart in the remakes).
