YMMV / Paper Puppets

Go To

  • Continuity Lock-Out: Many fans of Paper Puppets Take 2 were confused with the sudden appearance of Mr. Hand in "Blue Nightmares" and his relevance to the show due to them not watching the previous, less popular Paper Puppets for prior knowledge of the character. Thus, they treat him the designated Big Bad that appears out of nowhere.
  • Cry for the Devil: TBD.
  • Base-Breaking Character: While many fans love and sympathize with Journal, many others despise him due to him making irrational decisions and lashing out at his team due to his paranoia.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Glass Shard, while not evil, ignored Flashlight when she needed help, and only cared about himself and his phone. In the perspective of fans, he is portrayed as innocent, due to how sympathetic he is. Flashlight, on the other hand...
  • Dry Docked Ship: It's joked among fans that Journal and Treasure Chest were exes, with "Picture Perfect" was their divorce episode. This is likely due to the few interactions they had prior being rather positive, which says a lot given the characters involved. There have been numerous works dedicated to the idea of them talking things out and making amends.
  • Elimination Houdini: The Brackets have won every challenge up to the merge. Even in the merge, where they tend to get close to being eliminated, they end up escaping it either by manipulation or a mistake on the end of the other contestants. Some fans think they don't deserve to win and escape elimination as much as they did. Especially Basketball and Slipper since they are notorious among fans for contributing little in challenges. Other fans however believe that their win streak was justified given that they are able to play dirty to get what they want.
  • Fanfic Fuel: Journal's entire storyline is enough to warrant at least a dozen of these.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • YellowAngiru really does give it his all in the characters he voices. Highlights include Journal's pure, unbridled rage in "Dungeons and Dimwits" and "Platinum Puppets" and especially that evil laugh Mr. Hand makes in the former.
    • Towno gets massive honor for performing the scene in "Platinum Puppets" when Platinum is pathetically crying his eyes out.
    • WormBuffet and Sammy Oster are no slouches either, as they got a very great performance in "Platinum Puppets". Particuarly during their characters' argument after Post-It Note's elimination.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • In "Don't Press It!" Post-It Note offers to help Journal out, but not without asking if he trusts him to do so. Not only does their partnership fall apart over one disagreement in "Rainy Day", but Post-It Note himself gets eliminated 3 episodes later because Bottle trusted Chainsaw over him.
    • That same episode, Globe and Caramel Cube plan to break up the 47s in order to ensure the safety of their teams. They do succeed, and eventually Team 47 is left with 1 member by the time of the merge. Little do they know the consequences giving Chainsaw his own team will bring....
    • Treasure Chest worries about his remaining team splitting up in "All Fun and Games", and his teammates reassure that they won't. Following the events of "Rowdy Runaway", Malachite gets eliminated due to Treasure Chest himself using an immunity token, Bubblewrap gets eliminated following a double elimination sometime later, Ukulele switches over to Team ] because of the aforementioned event, and Journal not only becomes disillusioned with Treasure Chest, but runs away and gets eliminated the episode after. Leaving only Treasure Chest as the only remaining 47 by the time of the Merge. All in the span of 4 episodes!
  • Jerkass Woobie: Even though Gold Ingot has had a long history of being a Jerkass towards just about anyone, people felt sympathy upon seeing him show genuine remorse for causing Santa Hat and Loaf to quit the show. Even moreso when he not only attempts to atone for his behavior, but go out of his way to apologize to his former co-workers... Which ends up getting rejected anyway.
  • Ron the Death Eater:
    • Flashlight was hit with this after episode 5. Many portray her as a bad character who tried to hurt Glass Shard’s feelings about her, because of her aggression over Glass Shard's behavior as she tried to stand up for herself.
    • Since her departure from Team 47 to go work with Team ] (which would last only for one episode), people started portraying Ukulele as more a mean character, mainly due to Slipper being a Manipulative Bastard and Malicious Slander to her and even there exists fanart of this.
    • Many people make out Bottle to be this following "Platinum Puppets", deeming her stupid for letting herself for falling for Chainsaw's lies to voter out Post-It Note... When in actuality he manipulated her during a very tense and vulnerable moment for her and Post-It Note.
    • Treasure Chest was considered a nuisance for his attempts at trying to reason with Chainsaw. Him escaping elimination and having Journal be unhappy with him didn't make it any better either. While this has died down nowadays, some fans still believe he deserves to be eliminated proper.
  • Unpopular Popular Character:
    • Chainsaw and the Brackets (sans Ukulele). While the cast does hate them (save for a few others), they are shown to be massive fan-favorites in the fandom for their well-written personalities, and being very well-written villains.
    • Treasure Chest, who was seen as a threat among other teams due to his winning streak and even disliked by over half of his teammates(some of which have left said team), is a beloved character and the fandom shows their sympathy to him.
  • Shipping Goggles: A lot of fans tend to interpret even the most minor moments between characters as romantic. It's a common saying among the fans that the show "is all about the couples", despite there currently being no canon couples with the only known Official Couple falling apart in the second season.
  • Stuck in Their Shadow: Despite being in the series for far longer, Post-It Note and his contributions to the show are often overlooked in favor of fellow troubled genius Journal.
  • The Scrappy:
    • Slipper and Basketball were both this example in the first season. Before they managed to become fan-favorites in season 2.
    • Gong is disliked for letting the chicken burn and making his team lose, this has made him the first eliminated from season 2. Even as far as season 1, he was controversial due to the drama surrounding his recommender Friesfan 7844. Either way, he doesn't have the best reputation.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Slipper and Basketball by Season 2. Where they became more well-liked characters by the fanbase.
  • Sequel Displacement: The second season of Paper Puppets was way more popular than its first season. This leads to most fans confused about the major arc between Journal and Mr. Hand starting from "Blue Nightmares" due to not watching the previous season which would explain who the latter is.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Plasma Ball throwing Basketball upon the former reaching her Rage Breaking Point in episode 14 made many fans who didn't like the latter were fond about.
  • The Woobie:
    • Poor, poor Bottle. Her life started going downhill by merge, her friendship with Post-It Note died out all thanks to her not voting with him in the 13th episode, she decided to work with Chainsaw in episode 14, and she got Post-It Note eliminated on accident, and Post-It Note finally not wanting to listen to her apologize to him and her shedding Tears of Remorse at what she did. Geez, she needs a hug.
    • Seeing Treasure Chest strive to be a good team captain only for all his attempts to go awry makes you feel bad for him.
    • The lengths that Journal is willing to go through to stop Mr. Hand at the expense of his own well being is tragic... To say the least.
