YMMV / My Man Godfrey

Go To

  • Adorkable:
    • Godfrey. When he wasn't working, he was making jokes about his homeless situation to Irene, laughing about his shabby clothes, forgetting to take the price tag off his new suit (and being teased about it by Molly the maid), and his dancing when he's drunk.
    • Irene, being the eccentric that she is, who gets excitable like a child and does happy dances.
  • Fountain of Memes: Irene. Most of her dialogue has created a cult following.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "Godfrey loves me! He put me in the shower!"
    • There's also Irene telling Godfrey that she's terrible at telling jokes: "I never can think of the right thing to say 'til everybody's gone home."
    • Irene's monologues to try and get Godfrey to notice her with everyone in the room ignoring her.
      • "What is food?" is commonly referenced.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Some fans of William Powell squeed and swooned when they saw him as the homeless stubbly Godfrey in his debut scene.
  • Signature Scene: "[Godfrey] put me in the shower!" moment. When Irene pretends to faint to keep Godfrey around longer, he shocks her awake by sticking her in his shower and turning it on, just as Irene's mother walks in. Irene shrieks at her that she knows how much Godfrey cares about her because "he put me in the shower!" Many people who have seen this film often remember this part.
  • The Scrappy: Irene can be annoying. Her voice can be grating, she doesn't listen when Godfrey says that he's not interested or ignores her flirting and her presence in the background can be interpreted as being an Attention Whore.
