YMMV / Hylics

Go To

  • Awesome Music:
    • The battle theme from the second game in all its laidback glory.
    • Ditto for the aptly named "Fancy Meat Computer," the music that plays during the fight against the final boss, Gibby Redivivus.
    • "Xeno Arcadia," the song that plays during the side-scrolling minigames. That bassline! The slide guitar!
    • Really all of Chuck Salamone's music in both Hylics 2 and both of the musical expansions could qualify as they exist without any visual accompaniment and still kick ass!
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Many examples are featured in the game, the most notable being The Musical Break Room event.
  • Demonic Spiders: In the sequel, Poolmen and their upgraded counterpart Poolmagne. While their attacks are only decently strong, what makes them so dangerous is their ability to divide into two Poolmen/magne. While inflicting burning on them prevents them from multiplying (although, in the case of the Poolmagne, they will immediately respond to any attack with a counter that inflicts leaking), it is still easy to get overwhelmed in fights with multiple enemies. They used to be even worse, where the newly divided Poolmen would spawn with full health, prolonging the fight, thus increasing the chances of the Poolman multiplying again.
  • Fan Nickname: Some fans call Somsnosa "Soms" for short.
  • Game-Breaker: In Hylics 2, Pongorma's Lightning gesture deals damage equal to 175% of a normal snap attack, with the downside that he is forced to spend the next turn recharging in a 'stunned' state. However, giving Pongorma some speed-boosting equipment to ensure he moves first and having another team member (ideally Wayne or Somsnosa) cast Teledenudate to cure his stunned status will allow Pongorma to fire off high power bolts without ever needing to pause. Now add in the late-game Bottomless Juice to keep his Will topped up and Dedusmuln's Foam Armor to keep him alive, and Pongorma easily has the highest DPS of the team, which is a huge benefit against some of the nightmarish enemy mobs in later areas.
  • Genius Bonus: Hylics 2 reveals that the nonsensical Word Salad speech almost everyone spoke in the first game is caused by Gibby the Moon Wizard. This makes a lot of sense given that the moon is often associated with madness. The word "lunacy" derives from the Latin word for "moon," and in the Tarot, the Moon can represent illusions and mental illness.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The game also has a relatively large Japanese fanbase.
  • Good Bad Bugs: Paper cups are a rare artifact of an ancient civilization capable of massively increasing your maximum Will when used on a water cooler. As such, there are only six of both in the game. Well, allegedly. In Dedusmuln's tent, where a paper cup can be found, the event to pick up the item is bugged, and you can obtain infinite paper cups by interacting with it repeatedly. Luckily for the developer, the scarcity of water coolers keeps the player from completely breaking the game - one might, if not for that, be able to increase their Will infinitely. As it stands, though, this bug still allows players to entirely bypass searching across the game world for paper cups, and obtain all six necessary in one place.
  • Heartwarming Moments: After defeating Gibby in the second game, Wayne can speak to some of the supporting characters. This includes Old Wayne, who has this to say.
Old Wayne: "Wayne, you did as well as any of us could've hoped. Maybe someday you'll be Old Wayne."
  • Nightmare Fuel: The death animation in both games, which has Wayne's head melting until a skull remains.
    • Many of the basic enemies have strange designs that belong in nightmares. This is especially apparent in the second game, as the shift to Unity allows the enemies to have higher amounts of animations.
    • In the second game, things take a quite darker turn when Odozeir successfully frees Gibby. Once he's freed, Gibby quickly and quite literally nukes Wayne and his crew before restoring Hylemxylem and using it to turn everyone in New Muldul into gibbering beasts.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: When you get a new party member, you need to take them back to the TVs to make them learn new skills. It's best to just wait until you have all four members before backtracking to save yourself time.
  • Self-Fanservice: You'd be pressed to find more art depicting Wayne as a strange-headed Bishōnen than as a creepy clay person.
  • Sequel Difficulty Spike: Hylics 1's fights were fairly easy, but Hylics 2's fights are noticeably more difficult, with enemies like the Poolmagne that can duplicate and make a fight go out of control, the new ways status effects can debilitate you and so on.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: Pleasant Guitar, an oddly smooth & heartwarming track in a game soundtrack full of chaotic sounds.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Hylics 1 has its fans, but Hylics 2 is an improvement in almost every way.
