YMMV / House on Haunted Hill (1999)

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: That weird music montage showing Eddie and Sara trying to open the plates of the house, Blackburn trying to find Melissa, Price looking for Dr. Vannacutt, and Pritchett looking for more scotch. It comes off as awkward and strange, in comparison after Melissa's death and Price finds his assistant dead.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Watson Pritchett for his hilarious one-liners, being the smartest and most useful character in the movie, and being a likeable, sympathetic character. Almost everyone finds themselves wishing he lived with Sara and Eddie.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending:
    • The movie ends with the final two survivors escaping the evil ghosts of the house by climbing the tower and leaving through a window. Cue the sunshine and "we're alive!" hugs. And they get their checks since they survived the night. However, they're still both stranded on top of a sentient haunted house that will devour them the moment they go back inside, with no way down except a 200 foot drop off a cliff and no one coming to their rescue. Sara herself even questions how they'll get down. How are they getting out of there again? Although if one takes the events of the second film, they were able to get off the top. Somehow.
    • Presumably Price had other employees that knew about the party and went looking for him when he did not show up at his high profile events. The other guests, who are also quite high profile, may have told some friends or colleagues about it as well.
    • Price mentions a cleaning crew is scheduled to arrive at 9:30 in the morning the next day. Even if they couldn't directly help them, they probably heard Sarah and Eddie's calls for help, and the rescue happened from there.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Steven Price is not a nice guy, but considering all the crap he goes through, including a particularly horrific Mind Rape, and his Heroic Sacrifice and subsequent Fate Worse than Death makes it hard not to feel bad for him, especially when the sole reason Evelyn threw the party where she did was so she could conspire with her lover Dr. Blackburn to get Steven killed.
    • Pritchett as well: He's very much apathetic upon becoming trapped in the House and only makes dark comedic jabs and keeps repeating that everyone's going to die, but considering how terrified he was of the place, how both his father and grandfather died because of the House, it's not hard to blame him for boozing it up once he's stuck with the others.
  • Narm: "I had nothing to do with this! I was adopted!"
  • Retroactive Recognition: Ali Larter, who would go on to play Clear in the first two Final Destination movies. She would also go on to play Nikki in Heroes.
  • Signature Scene: A case could be made for Melissa's death after catching the ghosts on camera. It's mentioned, and praised, almost as often as the saturation chamber. The effective Jump Scare at the end is a big part of it.
  • The Woobie: Sara Wolfe. She's mentally and physically tortured by the ghosts of the house, and gaslighted into shooting Steven Price by Blackburn and Evelyn. Price even gets in on the gaslighting a bit, approaching her when she's holding him at gunpoint and telling him to stop she she will shoot him, and he can dupe Evelyn. When he flees the basement and starts calling for help, Sara is incredulous, since she knows she shot him and he should be dead. When he appears in the flesh after Pritchett opens the door for him, Sara can barely make eye contact with him, trembling and shaking her head in disbelief. Then he gets in her face and screams "RUN!" and then she gets an eyeful of what Price was talking about...
