YMMV / Hi-5

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo:
    • The entire chorus of "Robot Number 1". "Robot Number 1, hit the switch and turn me on/Robot Number 1, we're gonna have some fun."
    • Hell, the second verse: "You protect me, you make me feel/safe and sound you're as strong as steel/you teach me things that I didn't know." Pretty much the entire song is Robosexual innuendos.
  • Archive Panic: The entire Australian series alone (Original, House and the short-lived 2017 reboot) has 670 episodes so it will take 13 and a half days to finish the entirety of it non-stop.
  • Broken Base: Australian and American fans get into nationalism-based comment fights on YouTube.
  • Funny Moments: To the older crowd, the blooper reels can be pretty funny.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • Latin America loves Hi-5. The American series, and later the Australian series (both of which were dubbed in Spanish) were such a major success there that certain merchandise, such as dolls, were only available there and in 2010 a localised production of the Hi-5 Surprise! show started touring, with local actors impersonating the Australian cast. Reruns still air frequently on Discovery Kids and it was one of the few countries to get their own local version of the show, known as Hi-5 Fiesta.
    • Nowadays, Hi-5 is even more huge in Asia than it is in its home country, especially Malaysia to the point where the show is filmed and merchandise is sold exclusively there, much to the dismay of Australian/international fans. The show has even spawned three preschools in Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines, with a curriculum based around the series. You can only find Season 14-17 Hi-5 on Netflix Asia, since the series has stopped airing elsewhere (including internationally on Netflix).
    • In Hi-5's early days, they managed to be very successful in the UK and Ireland as their tour sold out within days of it being announced and the TV series was one of Milkshake! (Channel 5's kids block)'s most popular shows. Milkshake! also aired an exclusive special where the original gang travelled around London with the block's presenter Naomi Wilkinson on an open-top bus. Naomi also met the cast in Sydney, and several Milkshake! broadcasts featured Hi-5 members appearing as special guests. All of this happened before Cartoonito purchased the broadcast rights to the series and commissioned a UK version in 2008. Nowadays the series is mostly unheard of in the UK, aside from nostalgic teenagers and adults who remember the original cast.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Depending on the exact timing, it could be this or Actor Allusion, but during the song "Holiday", the camera focuses on Charli as she sings the line "come on let's get away". The same year this episode came out, Charli became a presenter on "Getaway", a long-running travel show also produced by the Nine Network, which she is still presenting for to this day
  • Periphery Demographic: Like their competitor The Wiggles, the band has some following from older audiences ranging from parents who come to their concert for a workout to teenagers (especially in Southeast Asia, mentioned above in Germans Love David Hasselhoff.). This was even lampshaded in the audio commentary from the show's creator, Helena Harris.
"The other interesting thing about Hi-5 is that we try on every single segment to ensure that we appeal to a wide age group, from as young as 2 through to 8-year-olds… even though we heard there are quite a few teens out there that enjoy Hi-5.”
  • Signature Song:
    • "L.O.V.E" was the most popular song, to the point where it got over 1 million on Spotify and it became common in live shows. It even received two remakes - one for Series 5 and again for Series 13.
    • Unsurprisingly, seeing as it was Hi-5's first ever song and another fan favourite, "Ready or Not" can also be applied here.
    • "Five Senses" as well, especially for the US group.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Long-time fans can often feel this way about the later incarnations of Hi-5.
  • Ugly Cute: Jup Jup is an adorable, if not slightly strange, purple octopus-like creature.
