The series as a whole contains examples of:
- Adorkable: Clarissa.
- Anti-Climax Boss: A non-violent example. Amber's clever outwitting of the Shining Demon amounts to just giving handing over the wrong person to his unknowing henchman.
- Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
- The three demons having sex in the shop window.
- The opening of American Monsters with the bogles.
- Amber eating the Shining Demon and basically nutting.
- Creepy Awesome: The Demons, obviously.
- Diabolus ex Machina: Milo's death at the end of American Monsters comes right out of nowhere and pretty much only happened for shock value.
- Ho Yay: Virgil Abernathy and Javier Santorum. Lampshaded by Amber.
- Memetic Molester: There's a Scooby-Doo expy called Two who humps who and whatever he can.
- Strangled by the Red String: Amber and Kelly's romance kind of comes out of nowhere.
- Tearjerker: Milo's death.
- Totally Radical: The online sections feel weird and come across as a bit "fellow kids". This may be intentional, as at least one of the members is actually Betty.
- Tough Act to Follow: It tends to be compared to Skulduggery Pleasant a lot rather than being judged on its own merits.
- Nightmare Fuel: Quite a bit.
- Padding: A lot of American Monsters seems to be a series of unrelated encounters that don't end up moving the plot forward.
- The Woobie: Poor, poor Glen.
