YMMV / Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Melvin really going through some issues or is he just a one-dimensional bully as seen?
  • Broken Aesop: Jonathan's principal tells him that he should be patient with his bully Melvin because he has problems, and that if he took the time they could become friends. While this naturally foreshadows his relationship with Damian, the film treats Melvin as a Butt-Monkey without giving him redeeming qualities. The message also falls apart because Damian genuinely wants to have friends meaning there's layers underneath his arrogance and rudeness, while Melvin simply likes to pick on Jonathan while never expressing any remorse. This is despite this apparently being the main theme the creators of the film were going for.
  • Cliché Storm: A common criticism of the film is how it's very paint-by-the-numbers for a Coming of Age Story action-adventure film from The '90s. Jon is a plucky Naïve Newcomer Kid Hero dealing with a one-dimensional Barbaric Bully at school who has a dad who does not show up at his baseball games and winds up saving the world with his Vitriolic Best Buds friend Damian after all the adult superheroes are incapacitated. The premise is nothing groundbreaking, making it easy to predict plot points in advance.
  • Complete Monster: Starro is an alien parasite that ended up trapped in space, where it grew to a massive size and began desiring domination over the universe. Taking control of nearly all superheroes on Earth, Starro sent its offspring to take over the minds of every human they can find, as it planned to drain the life out of the entire planet and then move to repeat the process on other worlds. Furious at Jon Kent and Damian Wayne for attacking it, Starro ordered the possessed heroes to kill them.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Fans are eager for this film because it revisits Jon Kent as a Kid Hero, which most of the fanbase prefers instead of his current depiction in the comics who went through a controversial Age Lift to young adulthood.
  • Older Than They Think:
    • This isn’t Jon Kent’s first animated appearance, as he made a cameo in the Teen Titans Go! episode “Chicken in the Cradle” on the “Father Son Bonding Time” montage card. He also appeared on Young Justice (2010). That said, this is his first leading role in a film.
    • This ain't the first time that Jimmy Olsen was made black.
