The Snail and the Whale is a 25-minute animated Short Film directed by Max Lang and Daniel Snaddon, It is part of a series of adaptations of Julia Donaldson's children's books by The BBC, a series that includes The Gruffalo, Zog, The Highway Rat and Room on the Broom.

When a little Snail dreams of adventure and seeing the world she befriends and catches a ride from a friendly humpback whale who takes her on a journey around the globe, however when the whale becomes beached it’s up to the snail to save him and prove that no matter how small, you can make a difference.

The voice cast includes Diana Rigg as the Narrator, Sally Hawkins as the Snail and Rob Brydon as the Whale.


Tropes

  • Gentle Giant: Despite the whale’s gigantic size he is friendly to smaller creatures (with the exception of predatory bullies - sharks).
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: The Whale and the Snail respectively.
  • Threatening Shark: The Snail and the Whale encounter a group of sharks that the whale protects the snail from.
  • Travel Montage: We see one as the whale and snail travel across the earth’s oceans and see different places on their journey.
