Webcomic / Alterity

Go To

''Alterity'' is a webcomic based off a Nuzlocke run done by the author, Mewitti. The story focuses on an androgynous kid named Robin going on a Pokémon journey through the Hoenn region.

Alterity contains examples of:

  • Ambiguous Gender: Robin's gender is never specified (beyond 'borl', anyway). They don't seem to mind what pronouns people call them, though.
  • Blatant Lies: Robin lies a lot in order to get their way. As one example, when Robin is trying to get past Steven's Aggron, they punch him so hard they injure their own hand (while he remains unharmed), and then they start yelling that he attacked them, and that he's a danger to society... even though everyone saw them strike first. This works, making Steven put Aggron in his Poké Ball to address the situation himself.
  • Daydream Surprise: At Dewford Gym, Dante gets intimidated by a picture of Brawly's team while Robin asks her if she's really ready to fight. She refuses, causing Robin to give up on their dreams while everyone Dante knows berates her for being such a disgrace... and then she snaps back to reality, where Robin is still waiting for her response.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Robin bets on a Pokémon battle for more money than they actually have because they think they're going to win. They don't, and Lassie dies.
  • Hiding Behind the Language Barrier: Pokémon have their own language that's unintelligible to humans. They often speak in this language in front of humans to keep them from understanding what they're saying.
  • Replacement Goldfish: After Bristle dies, Robin immediately catches another Pokémon of the same species and names them Bristle 2.0, claiming that they were "just sleeping!"note  Robin also attempts to do this with Lassie, but Dante stops them.
  • Shrinking Violet: Dante is very cowardly and insecure when Robin catches her. However, she eventually starts building up confidence.
  • Tempting Fate: Right when Bristle dies:
    Robin: Knock yourself out.
Talon: Don't you think you should be a little more... involved?
Robin: This grinding stuff is boring... She can handle herself. What's the worst that could happen?
(Bristle's head promptly comes rolling into view, detached from the rest of her body.)
Talon: That! That is the worst that could happen!!
  • What Measure Is a Non-Human?: Human society doesn't treat Pokémon as people so much as tools built for fighting, even though most of them are shown to be sapient and capable of speech.
