The film will be accompanied in theatres by a short film.

The names for the other new emotions.
  • Teal - Envy
  • Pink - Embarrassment
  • Indigo - Ennui
    • Confirmed

There's another new emotion who isn't part of the new group

There were no extra emotions in the adults' heads in the first movie because adults are better at managing their emotions.
As a person matures and gains better control of their feelings, the extra emotions running amok during adolescence begin to fade, and their roles are integrated into those of the original five. Some, if not all, of the extras could be shared between emotions (Anxiety for instance could be a combination of Fear and Sadnessnote ), adding another layer to the idea of greater emotional control since these extra emotions would require cooperation between the main five emotions; cooperation that might not have been possible when the person was young and their emotions inexperienced.
  • It makes sense if the new emotions are there for the development of the others. Children and teens feel one emotion very strongly; learning nuance is part of growing up.
  • Alternatively, they were still all there, and the movie will handwave it as them all just being in some separate room from the core five emotions, who likely take on more of a leading Council role as a person grows up.

Each of the previous emotions will get along with the new emotions.
If the emotions, both old and new, find out they have a lot in common, they could start specific friendships with each other.
  • Fear with Anxiety
  • Anger with Envy
  • Disgust with Embarrassment
  • Sadness with Ennui
Joy, being the only one without another emotion in common, will obviously have a harder time fitting in.
  • Jossed in the case of Embarrassment getting along with Disgust. Many promotional material shows Embarrassment getting along with Sadness instead.

Sadness will be the first of the original emotions to try to open up to the new guys.

After all, she's been in their side of the equation before with feeling out of place with the rest of the group and wondering what her job is.

Envy's personality will be that of a spoiled brat.
Given the poster image, Envy looks youthful and small, plus she has hairclips not unlike that of a little kid. I think those big ol' eyes are puppy dog eyes, since she is of course, Envy, and would pull that to beg for things she doesn't have.

The adult's "puberty" emotion location.
I think that the "puberty" emotions still exist in the adults we see, but they simply live in a floor underneath the main control room. Given that the brain guys are doing construction in Riley's control room, the end of the movie may involve them finishing construction down there, thus the new emotions move in underneath.

"Puberty" emotion's purposes
Over the course of the movie, we will figure out that these emotions exist as "adjectives" to the main emotions. Of course, things will be out of wack due to puberty. An example would be feeling bored, but still being happy (joy + ennui) or getting upset due to falling in public (anger + embarrassment).

The film will be semi-similar to "Turning Red"
Both movies feature girl puberty, so I'm expecting to see similar jokes and plot points relating to it.

Riley will get her first period
In Turning Red, Mei's mom thinking her daughter has hit her first period was played for comedic misunderstanding, but here it will actually happen for Riley. We will get a few jokes in Riley's mother's head as Mom's Joy attempts to put a positive spin on this development ("you've crossed the threshold into adulthood", "you'll be able to start a family someday", "it'll only be for a week or so every month from now until your fifties", etc), only to send Riley's Fear, Disgust, and Embarrassment deeper and deeper into a frenzy.

Some Muppet performers will cameo
Frank Oz and Dave Goelz appeared briefly in the first movie as a pair of bickering brain cells, and if nothing else it'd be fun to see them again.
  • Confirmed for Oz. His return was announced in his Disney Legend Nomination.

The emotions' purposes once the new guys have been introduced.

Here's my take on what each emotion does for Riley now.

Joy: Keeps Riley happy and willing to enjoy all of life's little things.

Sadness: Calls out for help whenever Riley needs it.

Fear: Keeps Riley safe and from getting hurt from or by external dangers.

Disgust: Keeps Riley from getting sick or poisoned both socially and literally.

Anger: Gives Riley the drive to fight to keep things fair for herself or others.

Anxiety: Keeps Riley mindful of her appearance or behavior so she can act in the appropriate way of any given situation and be more aware of how what she says or does can affect others feelings or perception of her.

Embarrassment: Helps Riley to learn from her past mistakes and slip ups by making her feel shame for something she did in the past or that happened to her so that she'll be less inclined to make that mistake again and be able to improve as a person.

Ennui: Acts as a base emotion for Riley when none of the other emotions are very responsive to or appropriate for a certain situation and let's her have a mental break to just think to herself or allows her to disconnect from a certain thing or situation that she has no particular interest in.

Envy: Acts as a way to give Riley more ambition and drive by making her want to have something that someone else has so bad that she’s more willing to put in the work and effort to be able to try and get or earn that very same thing for herself or at the very least something that's just enough like it.

Anxiety will evolve into Depression.
Assuming Anxiety is the most focused new emotion, and perhaps responsible for a lot of whatever conflicts Riley will face, an event may occur that causes Anxiety to get extremely overwhelmed, causing Riley to experience a debilitating depression that serves as the film's climactic hurdle, much like 22 becoming a Lost Soul in Soul. It will take both the old and new emotions to bring Anxiety (and by extension, Riley) back to normal.

The Personality Traits of the Other Three New Emotions
Since the Teaser Trailer showed that Anxiety is a socially awkward emotion, it's possible that the other three new emotions will likely be the same but will slowly gain different personalities during the movie. Embarrassment will likely be a Gentle Giant, Ennui will be The Eeyore, and Envy will be a Spoiled Brat as mentioned above.

Ennui and Envy will likely be Jerks with Hearts of Gold

The new emotions will serve as a Foil to the old emotions

Anxiety - Fear: Fear wants to protect Riley from an actual threat, while Anxiety wants Riley to worry about a threat that has not yet, or may never, happen.

Envy - Disgust: Disgust dislikes things and wants to keep Riley away from them, while Envy dislikes people and wants Riley to always think about them all the time compared to her.

Ennui - Anger: They both contrast each other heavily with one who has no emotion to anything, while another has an overreaction to things.

Embarrassment - Sadness: Sadness wants Riley to feel bad about things outside of herself, while Embarassment wants Riley to feel bad about herself.

The sequel will also have No Antagonist like the original
  • Possibly jossed, as the new trailer suggests that Anxiety and Embarrassment will be antagonists (implicitly along with their fellow pubertal emotions) after Anxiety orders Embarrassment to bottle them up (although she is visibly remorseful and only does so because Riley needs more "sophisticated" emotions), though there's nothing to suggest that they'll be anything other than Well Intentioned Extremists just yet.

There will be an explanation as to why the new emotions don't appear in the parents' heads

Bing Bong will return in the sequel.
While Bing Bong fades away from Riley's memory in the first film, it's never fully confirmed if a forgotten memory can be rediscovered again. Since Riley's parents may have pictures of Riley with her Bing Bong wagon, this could retrigger her memory of Bing Bong, which revives him. This could be analogy of remembering something forgotten from one's past.
  • From a merchandise angle, it might be better to bring Bing Bong back. Disney has since opened a Bing Bong themed candy store (Bing Bong's Sweet Stuff) in Disney California Adventure. Park executives may think his current fate is too morbid for the parks.

The person laughing at the end of the first trailer is initially scrapped emotion Schadenfreude.
At the end of the first trailer, sinister laughter is heard. This laughter resembles the laugh of a scrapped moustachioed emotion with overalls named Schadenfreude. This could mean that Pixar is bringing him back.
  • That’s Ozzie Osborne’s laugh from Crazy Train, the song playing in the trailer.

The plot will be about the new emotions going unchecked and getting out of control.

The iPhone ringtone "Opening" will be used at some point in the film, maybe as Riley's ringtone compared to the generic one from the first movie.
First off, Pixar is fond of promoting Apple products, with the "Popcorn" alert sound playing in the first film. Second, another Disney-owned film used "Opening" as a character's ringtone.

Embarrassment is the Reincarnation of Bing Bong
Similar to the above bringing him back but in the new body of an emotion. One way it could happen is in the form of Riley vaguely remembering Bing Bong and being embarrassed by it, or something else similar...

The new Emotions will be locked away like the originals were in the 2nd trailer, or at least relocated to the cubicles
Which is why the adults don't have the new ones in their Headquarters. It serves as a metaphor for bottling up negative emotions and learning how to manage them later in life.

In the face of these new, seemingly problematic emotions, Joy will be so determined to not repeat the mistakes of the first movie that she'll swing too far in the other direction.
A scene in the second trailer shows Joy shoving Anxiety aside during one interaction and consequently having Riley make a fool of herself when chatting to one of her classmates. Odds are she'll be called out for this moment of Aesop Amnesia, and will resolve to make sure these newcomers have their chance to shine, even if it seems counterintuitive in the short term.

Consequently, she brushes off the issues caused by their increasing activity until Anxiety tries to overthrow her and the others entirely.

This will add an asterisk to the Aesop of the first movie: Even though every emotion has a function, that doesn't mean they should be left uncontrolled. (Think back to the scene in the first movie when we see a montage of toddler Riley crying as Joy tries to ponder what Sadness's purpose is. Yes it turns out Sadness is still important to an older Riley, but it wouldn't have done Riley any favors if Sadness was allowed to keep having her cry over every setback.)

The main conflict of the film might come from the miscommunication between the main five emotions and the new emotions about Riley's future in high school.
As explained above, Joy has a moment of Aesop Amnesia which could be a usual case of reusing the same flaw from the last film. But what if it's not the full case if the movie retains its character consistency?

On further thought, the conflict within Riley's mind would lead to her choosing the cool kids rather than her current friends. Sounds familiar? This is a parallel to when her previous childhood friend, Meg, seemingly 'replaced' Riley with a new girl on their hockey team. Meg unwittingly talking about how great the new girl in front of Riley probably left a mental scar on her, especially since it caused the collapse of Friendship Island in the first place.

Upon encountering the cool kids today, the new emotions jump to befriend them over fear of being replaced again by Riley's current friends, whether provoked by finding the certain memory or the other emotions (Anger likely, given his strong reaction to Meg 'replacing' Riley). But Joy, while wondering what roles the new emotions could fulfill after learning her lesson, would think it should be fine for Riley to be herself due to already having good company and thus the eventual finger-guns gesture...until a combination of Anxiety, Envy and Embarassment (not sure about Ennui) convinced Riley that she has to be acceptably presentable.

A few arguments will likely follow. While Joy can be called out for overriding other emotions, she might counter back that they have yet to think about what is necessary for Riley and what she already has. In other words, you can't let the boy fish without teaching him how to use the fishing rod. But after too many mistakes or an Anxiety-based memory causing a significant step for Riley (whether positive or negative), Anxiety would follow her belief that Riley will be alone forever if she doesn't change and bottles Joy and the others to 'prevent' them from making Riley miserable again.

The big Tear Jerker moment will be…
The first film’s two big gut punches were Bing Bong’s death and Riley breaking down in front of her parents. With the introduction of emotions like Anxiety, there are potentials for Pixar to really get the waterworks going.

  • The climax will involve the main five emotions having to stop whatever Anxiety and the new emotions are doing to Riley. Anxiety may have a breakdown and have Joy, or possibly even Sadness, be the one to talk them down from their funk and let them know that sometimes it’s okay to be anxious.
  • Whatever the emotions cause inside Riley’s head will lead to a major conflict outside between her friends (the ones in the trailer that she seems to be ditching) and her new friend Val. It’s possible Riley will be torn between choosing between her old and new friends until maybe she finds a compromise and is able to hang out with all of them, or a more bittersweet outcome will be that Riley lets one of these friends or friend groups go, with the lesson being that not every friend stays in your life forever, and that’s not always a bad thing, even if it can feel sad.

We will witness another animated panic attack in animated media
Anxiety is a character here, so I wouldn’t be surprised at some turning point or major conflict in the movie, Anxiety (or even a mix of emotions fighting for control) accidentally/purposely causes Riley to have a panic attack.

There will be a 10th emotion, which is "Love".
As mentioned above, all of the new emotions compliment one of the original emotions. However, Joy is the odd emotion left out of this factor. This could be a hint that a 10th emotion will be introduced to compliment Joy. The likely emotion would be "Love", which would also coincide with Riley beginning to to have romantic feelings. Love is a good intention, but flawed emotion. Love brings out affection and compassion in Riley, but has a tendency to go overboard. This leads to Riley becoming "blinded by Love" and ignore her reality.
  • Jossed. The "10th emotion" is nostaligia.

The movie will show other versions of the new emotions.
Much like the first film, the new emotions will appear in the heads of the characters. They will also vary in appearance based on each character.
