  • Fake American: Brit Ralph Ineson plays an American military officer.
  • Fake Nationality: Alphie is supposed to have the appearance of a child with Asian and African ancestry but is played by a child with Asian and German ancestry. Presumably a child with a clear mix of Asian and African features would have made Alphie's origin too obvious before the reveal.
  • Harpo Does Something Funny: Gareth Edwards revealed that which extras would be A.I. was generally never planned during filming, and those who were transformed during VFX work were randomly chosen as a means for the robots to act fairly naturalistic in the environment and allow for Worldbuilding.
  • Inspiration for the Work: Gareth Edwards got the idea after finishing Rogue One, and taking a break by going on a four-day road trip to his girlfriend's home state of Iowa. Not expecting to think of any film ideas on this trip, he simply put on his headphones and looked out the window. That's when he saw a factory with a Japanese-looking logo on it, situated amid the tall grass and farmland. "I wondered, 'What they're doing in there? Oh, maybe it's robots or something cool,'" Edwards recalled during a recent press conference. "And then I was thinking, 'Oh, imagine being a robot built in a factory and you step outside the factory for the first time.'" The idea took ahold of his imagination, and by the time he got to his girlfriend's parents' house, he had the basics of the whole movie mapped out.
  • Production Posse: Gareth Edwards reteamed with several crew members from Rogue One for this project, including co-writer Chris Weitz, casting director Jina Jay, and cinematographer Greig Fraser (though Fraser's commitments to Dune: Part Two prevented him from being actively involved after pre-production, with Oren Soffer serving as the main cinematographer during the film's production). The film also co-stars Ken Watanabe, who appeared in Edwards' Godzilla.
  • Similarly Named Works: Shares its title with a 1999 French film.
  • What Could Have Been: Danny McBride and Benedict Wong were originally cast as Drew and Harun respectively, and dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Sturgill Simpson and Ken Watanabe replaced them.
  • Working Title: "True Love".
