  • The Cast Showoff: Michael Pitt can play guitar left-handed just like Kurt Cobain, although there are times when he plays with his right hand.
  • Cast the Expert / Throw It In!: Thadeus A. Thomas who plays the Yellow Pages salesman was not an actor but an actual salesman. His appearance in the film happened by accident as he was passing by and attempted to sell the cast and crew ad spaces for the book. Intrigued by his presence, Van Sant decided to cast him in the film and the scene where Thomas discusses Blake's ad space was improvised.
  • Copiously Credited Creator: Directed, producted, written and edited by Gus Van Sant.
  • Creator Cameo: Gus Van Sant voices one of the callers.
  • The Danza: Most of the characters share their names with the actors that portray them:
    • Luke is played by Lukas Haas.
    • Asia is played by Asia Argento.
    • Scott is played by Scott Green.
    • Nicole is played by Nicole Vicius.
    • The Elder Fribergs are played by Adam and Andy Friberg.
  • In Memoriam: The film is dedicated to Kurt Cobain for obvious reasons.
  • Mid-Development Genre Shift: Gus Van Sant originally conceived this project as a full-on biopic on Kurt Cobain but after discussing the project with Courtney Love, he thought against it as Love was still devastated by her husband's suicide to even collaborate on such a film.
  • The Other Marty: Initially, Danish actor Holger Thaarup was set to play Blake and was going to be a silent character as Thaarup didn't speak English. Van Sant replaced him with Pitt as the upcomer looked the part better.
  • Shrug of God: Both Van Sant and Asia Argento have denied that the latter's character is based on Cobain's wife Courtney Love. Argento has even stated that they avoided any references to Love as she has already faced too much flack from Cobain's fans regarding his suicide.
  • Written by Cast Member: Blake's song "Death to Birth" was written by Michael Pitt himself.
