Trivia / Johnny the Homicidal Maniac

  • Creator Backlash:
    • After seeing how many readers were taking Johnny's Humans Are Bastards rants at face value, Jhonen Vasquez expressed some regret for how the scenes were written, as he felt they didn't properly convey the explicitly delusional, hypocritical Straw Nihilist he wanted the character to be. He also distanced himself from any notion that the character was his Author Avatar, for obvious reasons.
Jhonen: What the hell was your problem, nineteen-year old me? I do still like Fillerbunny. Stupid ages better.
    • On a more lighthearted note, Jhonen also found the formatting, editing, and cleanup of the comic hilariously slapdash and amateurish when he returned to the original pages years later to scan them for a digital reissue of the series.
Jhonen: I have to approach each page with a kind of detachment from how annoying or outright ugly something is to me NOW. The books are what they are, and what they are is the product of someone just floundering around with pen and paper having fun doing something they’ve no clue how to do.
  • Trolling Creator: Jhonen enjoys being this on Twitter. Someone once asked if it was acceptable for a white person to cosplay Johnny, since Word of God was that Johnny is Hispanic. Jhonen responded by saying that "Well, first of all, Nny is two-dimensional, so anyone cosplaying him in three dimensions is automatically doing it wrong."
  • What Could Have Been: The earliest written strips of the series (from Jhonen Vasquez's high school days) were titled Johnny The Little Homicidal Maniac and depicted the character as a Creepy Child. There was also no satire in it to speak of; it was all Black Comedy.
  • Writer Revolt: Jhonen Vasquez started drawing Happy Noodle Boy when his girlfriend at the time wouldn't stop asking him to draw her stuff while he was working on the comic.
