Trivia / Jeanne du Barry

Go To

  • Box Office Bomb: The film cost $22 million to make and brought in roughly $12.5 million throughout its run in most of the continental European markets. It was sold directly for streaming in the US and a lot of other markets.
  • Dawson Casting: Jeanne du Barry was 25 when she first met Louis XV. Maïwenn was 46 when playing the part.
  • Directed by Cast Member: Maïwenn directed the film and played the main role.
  • Fake Nationality: The American Johnny Depp as the French king Louis XV.
  • Hostility on the Set: Maïwenn and Johnny Depp got along well when filming started, but by the end they were constantly having arguments. Depp didn't show up on some days of shooting that started at 6 am (not really helped by the fact that filming started one month after the end of Depp's much publicized defamation trial against Amber Heard), and Maïwenn wouldn't show up the next morning as reprisal. In an interview released after the film left theaters, Maïwenn said that Depp was not nearly as invested in the film as she had hoped he'd be and that she probably would not work with him again.
  • Saved from Development Hell: Maïwenn said that she had intended to make the film as far back as 2007.
  • What Could Have Been: Gérard Depardieu was the original choice to play Louis XV before Johnny Depp was brought in. Of note, Depardieu (then-74) was too old to play the 58 year old king, while Depp is much closer in age (at 59 during the filming).
  • Written by Cast Member: Maïwenn co-wrote the film with Teddy Lussi-Modeste, and played the main role in it.
