"Am I to blame?"

Black is a 2017 OCN original Korean Drama series featuring a Grim Reaper, a police detective, and a woman with the ability to know when people are about to die. It had a simultaneous international release on Netflix.

Black provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Belligerent Sexual Tension: Between Black and Ha-Ram, who constantly argue but clearly grow more attracted to each other and care for each other.
  • Blessed with Suck: Ha-Ram has a sense of when people around her are about to die. Despite her warnings to this effect, they usually don't believe her.
  • Borrowed Biometric Bypass: The man with the missing finger attempts to cut out Moo-Gang's eyes to get past the retinal lock to his basement.
  • Four Is Death: Black's reaper number is 444.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Ha-Ram's ability to see reapers as shadows comes from being half-reaper.
  • Humanity Is Infectious: Black laments how he is beginning to sympathize with and care about humans after spending time with the police force and Ha-Ram.
  • I Never Got Any Letters: As a child, Ha-Ram wrote Kim Joon many letters after he moved, but never got any replies, which made her think he no longer cared about her. Moo-Gang destroyed at least one of them out of jealousy.
  • Manchild: Moo-Gang is allegedly a police detective, but he has an incredibly weak stomach, and goes to work in brightly coloured hoodies.
  • Tomato in the Mirror: Black explains that reapers are made one of two ways: they are either born reapers or they were humans who committed suicide. Turns out, born reapers are really former humans whose bodies have been missing and never found. That includes Black.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Not even 15 minutes into the first episode, Moo-Gang has already vomited all over a crime scene... twice, and later on all over a leader of a gang... also twice.
