Go To

A book of hours (a religious text from a monastic community intended to be read from at specific times as a show of devotion) with a history of miraculous healings has been stolen from a church.

Tropes:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Barelli wants to have back the Books of Hours so badly that he actually starts begging Peter to help him find it.
  • Bait-and-Switch Gunshot: Neal seems to get shot by Maria but it turns out that the Book of Hours stopped the bullet.
  • Bavarian Fire Drill: Mozzie pretends that he is from Evidence Recovery and retrieving a urine swap so that he can get past the NYPD officer guarding Ignacio's apartment. He walks with purpose and only stops when the officer tells him to and, when the officer does not want let him pass, convinces him by saying that if he isn't allowed to take the swab, the officer has to do it himself. When the officer still does not comply, Mozzie pretends to make a call to his boss and the officer eventually relents.
  • Betrayal Insurance: Neal has taken off the clip of Maria’s gun in case she tries to shoot him during the transaction.
  • Blunt "Yes": Elizabeth proposes that Neal take out Maria on a date in order to get the necessary evidence to arrest her. Peter then asks Neal if Maria would agree to go on a date with him and Elizabeth immediately answers “yes.”
  • Canine Companion: Steven admits that he agreed to steal the “healing bible” thinking it would cure his sick dog Lucy.
  • Can't Tie His Tie: Elizabeth has to tie Peter's "lucky tie" for him since he keeps messing it up.
  • Churchgoing Villain: Everyone in the church where the Book of Hours has been stolen has a felony record.
  • Commonality Connection: Barelli likes dogs too and when he finds out that Steve’s dog Lucy is sick, he forgives him for stealing the Book of Hours and offers to take them to a vet that helped his dog when they were sick.
  • Exact Words: Peter tells Neal that he cannot do anything when Ruiz takes over the investigation, implying that Neal can. Neal then asks to borrow Peter's FBI windbreaker and promises that he absolutely won’t impersonate the FBI, having Mozzie do it instead.
  • Fake Defector: As part of his and Peter’s plan, Neal cuts his tracker and pretends he betrayed the FBI so that Maria will trust him and sell the Book of Hours to him, after which they can arrest her.
  • Impersonating an Officer: Mozzie impersonates an FBI officer to get past the NYPD officer into Ignacio’s apartment, and to later take the Book of Hours from Neal to give it to Steve.
  • Improvised Armor: Neal holds the book of Hours in front of him as a shield when Maria shoots him which stops the bullet.
  • Instantly Proven Wrong: Peter has trouble believing that a woman like Maria could kill someone. Then Elizabeth comes home being angry at someone on the phone and he immediately takes that back.
  • It Works Better with Bullets: Subverted. Neal takes off the clip of Maria's gun when he pats her down so that she cannot shoot him later. However, when he later reveals this to her after she points her gun at him she reminds him that there is still one in the chamber.
  • Jurisdiction Friction: Ruiz from Organized Crime wants to take over the case when one of Barelli's men gets shot, and Peter has to cooperate with him which proves to be difficult because Ruiz is not happy about Neal's presence.
  • Map All Along: There is a map of the NY subway on the bottle that Kate left behind for Neal.
  • Oh, Crap!: Neal, when Maria tells him that there is still a bullet in the chamber after he reveals that he has taken off the clip.
  • Phallic Weapon: When Maria pats down Neal in a very sensual way:
Lauren: She making sure that's not a gun in his pocket?
  • Planning with Props: Neal demonstrates the situation using eating utensils and cups to represent each person involved.
