Recap / What We Do in the Shadows S3E3 "Gail"

Go To

The group discovers that Nandor has been sneaking out to hook up with a human lover, Gail. He announces his plan to propose to her and make her a vampire. Meanwhile, Laszlo discovers the car that the Vampiric Council stole from him decades earlier.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: Played for Laughs. Colin and Laszlo spend the whole day disassembling and reassembling his old car, causing a massive mess and destroying who knows how many priceless artifacts, when they could have just opened the garage door.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In a Confession Cam, Laszlo explains that the car was taken from him when he was caught transporting (what sounds like) minors across state lines. We then see a picture revealing that he was actually transporting miners across state lines.
  • Bookcase Passage: The room with Laszlo's car is hidden behind one of these. Laszlo accidentally opens it when he notices a hardcover edition of a book that as far as he know should not exist, and tries to take it out of the bookcase, only to find out it's the lever for the door.
  • Call-Back: Nandor apologizes for throwing the squeaky toy to have a werewolf leap off a roof.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Anton hears Guillermo's threat that he is a "heart-guard", he then reminds his pack to take their de-worming medication.
  • Emergency Transformation: After Nadja accidentally hits Gail during the kickball game, it appears that she's been killed. Nandor then turns her into a vampire to prevent her from dying.
  • Forgot About His Powers: After flailing from being set alight by the jalopy's backfire, Colin admits that it was a joke and calmly walks to the car while still on fire.
  • Hopeless with Tech:
    • The Vampiric Council's website looks like something from Geocities in the 90s. Subverted with The Guide, whose revamp, while her first effort in web development, is very decent overall and was mainly criticized for having "too exciting a font."
    • Colin and Laszlo disassemble and reassemble their car, only to blow the thing up the moment they try driving it afterwards. They also fail to notice the garage door and its Big Red Button.
  • Insistent Terminology: Nandor points out a couple of times that a female werewolf is properly called a werewoman. While this term is commonly used, it doesn't really make sense; the 'were' part just means 'man', so while a werewolf is a wolf-man, a werewoman would be a man-woman.
  • Ironic Echo: Nandor wants to turn Gail into a vampire so they can be together for all eternity through marriage. After being transformed, Gail says that they'll have all eternity to... figure out whether she should marry him or not.
  • Irony: Nandor, someone who regularly takes things for granted falls for Gail, who's been doing just that with their relationship.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Nadja might be frustrated with Nandor, but her dislike of Gail really isn't unfounded. Gail hasn't really been sensitive towards him and it shows when she blatantly cheats on him.
  • Missing Reflection: After Laszlo backs over Colin Robinson, he claims that he couldn't see him in the mirror for this reason. Colin Robinson reminds him that he himself has a reflection while Laszlo doesn't.
  • The Reveal: As Gail tries to leave, Nadja tries to stop her despite her insistence. Before she can leave, the full moon comes out and Gail turns out to be a werewolf.
  • Running Gag: Every guy in the group automatically assumes that Nadja hates Gail on the basis of being another woman, to which Nadja exasperatedly points out that she actually likes Gail, she just doesn't want to see Nandor go through a bout of emotional distress when Gail leaves him again, which is a perfectly valid reason to not want him dating her.
  • Sex with the Ex: The other Nightwalkers burst into a hotel room after following Nandor to find him with his old girlfriend.
  • Shout-Out: Guillermo proposes that the vampires and werewolves settle their differences "Twilight style"—that is, playing a game of kickball. The music that plays during the kickball game is the same tracknote  that plays during the Cullens' baseball game in the first movie.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Nandor's potential relation with Gail becomes this when she is revealed to be a werewolf, who are the vampires sworn enemies. Nadja even scolds him for dating a Werewolf.
  • There Was a Door: After discovering that they can't get the car out of the building, Laszlo and Colin Robinson come up with the plan to disassemble it and reassemble it outside. The plan doesn't go seamlessly, as they damage a lot of artifacts in the library while carrying the parts out. When The Guide finds out, she tells them that they could have used the door while pointing out how much damage they've caused. It turns out they didn't know about the door.
  • Vampiric Werewolf: The titular character starts out as a regular werewolf, but at the end of the episode Nandor attempts to turn her into a vampire in a last-ditch attempt at saving her from death. It works, against all odds, and when she tries to fly away she transforms into some sort of half-wolf half-bat creature, indicating her lycanthropy and vampirism are present in equal measure.
  • Visual Pun: Laszlo had his jalopy impounded for using it to traffic miners. The next slide of coal miners clarifies this.
  • Werewolves Are Dogs: During the kickball game, one of the werewolves steals the ball and buries it in the snow like a dog would. Anton also reminds the other werewolves to take their medication for heartworm, which tends to afflict dogs more than wolves.
