Recap / The Witcher 2019 S 03 E 01 Shaerrawedd

Go To

We meet Geralt hunting down and killing a professor and his team of bodyguards. This is followed by him moving with Yenn and Ciri from location to location, avoiding hunters after the girl. Eventually they get tired of the chase and decide to go after the man behind the hunt, luring him into a trap.

  • Action Prologue: The episode opens with Geralt fighting a group of humans for reasons we don't know.
  • Dramatic Irony: Fans of the books and games know that Ciri's determination to end the hatred and violence between elves and humans won't work out.
  • Easily Forgiven: Averted. Geralt still hasn't forgiven Yenn for nearly sacrificing Ciri to Voleth Meir, and she trains Ciri in magic (communicating with Geralt through notes) in the hopes that he'll eventually forgive her.
  • Everyone Can See It: As Geralt warms back up to Yenn and she muscles her way back into his affection, Yarpen sees their reacquired closeness and happily asks "Are you two fuckin' again?".
  • Happily Adopted: Ciri and Geralt are now thoroughly father and daughter, with her jumping on his back when they come home from a boar hunt and Geralt playfully putting her in a headlock after she hops down. She's also accepted Yenn, with a bit of play as Yenn teaches her to ice-skate.
  • Magic Knight: After a lot of time training with Geralt and Yenn, Ciri is well started on her path to this. Of course, she's not quite there yet. She's not able to take on a wild creature, but she's more than capable against a handful of the thugs Reince brings against her.
  • Mama Bear: Yenn is fully there with respect to Ciri, as noted when the elves show up to kidnap Ciri.
    Francesca: She belongs with
Yenn: [interrupting] ME. [blast of magic]
  • Mêlée à Trois: The trap to lure out Reince ends up in a fight between Yarpen and his dwarves, Reince and his thugs, and Francesca's elves.
  • Non-Answer: Jaskier asks Geralt to promise never to involve him as bait in a trap ever again. Geralt's response is "Thank you, Jaskier."
  • Oh, Crap!: Ciri is very upset to see her old friend Dara among the elves attacking the fake caravan in an attempt to kidnap her.
  • Overshadowed by Awesome: Though Ciri isn't a complete greenhorn, she's still not as badass a fighter as Geralt or as capable a sorcerer as Yenn.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Yenn's Beltane costume is a nice dress and a lacy domino mask. Ciri's is a nice dress and a mask on a stick she holds in her hand and immediately discards. Geralt's is a long cloak with a hood to cover his white hair.
  • Perennially Overshadowed Birthday: Subverted. Not only is Ciri a princess and guaranteed her special day in the past, but the fact that it falls on Beltane means that, even in hiding in the present, she can go out and celebrate in costume without bringing down the heat.
  • Really Gets Around: Ah, Jaskier. "It was one time! Admittedly with lots of different people!"
  • Rule of Three:
    • The first home they move into (which gets burned), Geralt hands the former occupant a coinpurse in payment "for [his] discretion". The second one we see also gets paid for his discretion. Then they move in to Yarpen's place, who expects to be paid for his discretion.
    • This gets lampshaded by Jaskier when his argument with his current (newest ex, actually) lover kicks him out and first Philippa surprises him, then Radovid, then Yarpen, and he introduces himself to the last.
Yarpen: I know, I know, I fucking know!
Jaskier: I know you know, it's a rule of threes thing, has to be done.
  • Training Montage: The first act is a slower one than normal, showing Ciri gradually learning magic under Yenn's tutelage as the trio move from isolated homestad to isolated homestead.
  • The Unreveal: An unseen figure repairs the damage to Reince's wrists, showing that his employer is either a mage or has another mage in his employ.
