Recap / The Simpsons S 31 E 15 Screenless

Go To

Marge limits the family's time using screen devices but later on has trouble getting through her day without them. When things don't improve, the entire family checks into rehab for screen addiction.

  • Achievements in Ignorance: Homer is able to unscramble the words "jinx" and "quip" despite not knowing what they mean.
  • Call-Back: Homer changing a "garden" sign so that it reads "danger" alludes to the episode where a "danger" sign is changed so that it reads "garden".
  • The Cameo: Gavin, the spoiled kid from "Marge Be Not Proud" and "Lisa Gets an A", makes a small appearance at the Messages Resort.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Dana Gould, who has written for the show and played a variety of characters, plays himself here.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: The family shows Marge their reduced screen time (or in Lisa's case no screen time) only for her to find out they hired someone to tamper with their phones when the guy comes back to retrieve a tool he left behind at the Simpsons house.
  • Chekhov's Gun: The skills that several Simpsons members acquired during the episode help them escape the resort.
    • Homer uses his skill at jumbling letters by changing a "garden" sign so that it reads "danger" to distract the guards.
    • Maggie uses the sign language to communicate using talc powder to make the lasers visible.
    • Bart calls on Jimbo and Kearney to bring the Jupiter One rocket they built earlier as a getaway car.
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: When Marge declares "No more screens", she turns to the audience and says "You too!". Cut to commercial.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: When Bart starts using his imagination with a toy rocket instead of stay distracted by his phone, it looks like Dolph, Kierney and Jimbo are going to bully him. Instead they join in and help create their own space mission, complete with a cardboard space ship.
  • Irony: When Marge fully bans the family from screens, she eventually turns to the internet for a pasta sauce recipe and gets caught by the others.
  • I Will Show You X!: When Kearney and Jimbo catch Bart playing with a toy rocket he calls Jupiter One, Jimbo threateningly says "I'll show him Jupiter One!" Cut to them joining Bart with a Jupiter One built out of cardboard boxes.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Bart watches One Froggy Evening on his phone.
Bart: He only sings when we're not looking. Classic aggravation humor.
    • Baby Yoda gets mentioned.
Maggie: (signing) I was America's baby once.
    • One of the rehab facilities advertised in The Stinger is Downton Rehabby.
    • When the family is sneaking out of the rehab facility, Homer stepped on a DVD of A Quiet Place and his reaction is a silent "D'oh!"
  • Tempting Fate: When Dr. Lund is arrested, he says he can mess with Chief Wiggum's spotify choices and hopes the latter likes "Little River Band". Chief Wiggum does like it as he plays one of their songs on their way to jail and Lund asks him to turn on the siren.
