Release: December 1, 2009

Movie: Jack Frost (1998)

This review contains examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: The Critic cracked up at the bully's puzzled look after Jack Frost talks to him.
  • invokedAlternate Character Interpretation: Critic dubs over Jack's wife's voice saying they cut the brakes to his car so he'd get killed, this being done to match Snowman!Jack's stunned expression when she leaves.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": "It's a family of sarcastic time wasters!"
  • Call-Back / Continuity Nod: At one point in the film, Jack Frost gets two snowballs thrown onto his chest; Jack contemplates keeping them there but says "Nah, I don't think so" and throws them off.
Critic: Wow. I didn't think anything could top Duck Tits, but that came pretty damn close!
  • invokedEnsemble Dark Horse: Critic's favorite "character"? The "chained-up Superman with Batman's head" figure in Jack's son's room. Critic even wishes Jack came Back from the Dead in that form instead of as the snowman.
  • Jump Scare: Critic freaks out when the snowman's head gets close to the screen.
  • Rule of Three: At the end of the review:
Critic: The premise is stupid, the premise is stupid, oh, and did I mention the little fact that the PREMISE IS FUCKING STUPID?!
  • Self-Deprecation: When the Critic is puzzled by the Jack Frost Band's popularity:
Critic: I don't know why, I just really have a hang-up that this band could be successful. I mean, they really think this would span out through a large audience? Yeah right, and I'm in this months issue of Entrepreneur! (it turns out he is) Well, they'll print anything these days.
  • Shout-Out
    • Critic dubs over Jack and his son where the son asks where he got the harmonica and Jack responds he read it in Chicken Soup for the Soul.
    • Seeing Jack endanger the kids going after his son makes Critic confuse this movie with the horror flick of the same name.
    • A screaming sound from The Ren & Stimpy Show plays when two kids see they're about to be sandwiched between two giant snowballs.
    • When one of the kids makes fun of Charlie for talking to his seemingly inanimate snowman, Critic is heard saying "See ya later, Harvey".
  • Sting: Jack Frost's expression after his wife told him:
Critic: (as Jack's wife) Myyyyy don't you look like my husband... except you probably would've figured out I've been cheating behind his back for years. That's why I had to cut his breaks and send his car flying off that cliff... well nice talking with you, inanimate snowman. It feels good to tell the truth sometimes, doesn't it? Bye!
  • Subverted Catchphrase:
Critic: Hellooooo, I'm The Nostalgia Christmas. I Christmas so Christmas Christmas. (Beat) CHRISTMAS!!!
  • Take That!: Critic compared the film's first act to an Ang Lee film.
"I mean we're like 35 minutes in and we haven't seen one wink of Frosty T. Blowman!
