Release: March 26, 2013

Focus: The Disney Princess franchise

This editorial contains examples of:

  • Anti-Role Model: Critic deduces that princesses are a target for flak these days because they promote dainty and innocent behavior instead of willingness and responsibility even though the classic ones, Belle, Mulan, and others do exactly this.
  • Call-Back: Critic makes note of his past hate for "princess" characters by showing a clip from his Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) review.
  • Double Standard: Discussed by him. A boy becoming a king? Great goal value. A girl becoming a queen? Wrong, she should be a princess!
  • Flat Character: Critic calls Aurora this, since she does almost nothing to progress herself, even while awake.
  • Good Princess, Evil Queen: Critic says that many girls want to be princesses and not queens is that there are so many evil queens in media and rarely any kind ones.
  • Note to Self: When Critic notes an epiphany he had while watching Bridge to Terabithia, he says he hated the film and makes a note to himself to review it in the future.
  • Princesses Rule: Discusses his dislike of the trope in the video's second half, and comes to the conclusion that it bothers him because it suggests that girls should gain power but not too much so that they can still keep the fun of being a little girl and not have to bother with that much responsibility.
  • Reconstruction: For the first half of the video, Doug takes the stance that perhaps most of the Disney Princesses aren't so bad after all, despite the heavy backlash they've received across the Internet, including on his site.
  • Self-Deprecation: The "Premium Area" advertisement drifts off into Doug jokily humiliating himself by thinking the site is gonna die soon and admitting he's been ignoring his mom for ages.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: A brief dialogue with Snow White and Queen Grimhilde occurs.
Snow White: I could be queen.
Queen Grimhilde: But don't you remember? All queens are evil!
Snow White: That'll be the first thing I'll change.
    Queen Grimhilde: Fuck.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Brings up how Snow White and Cinderella have been criticized for seemingly being lazy and not pursuing a life outside of the home, and argues that's not really fair to them because cleaning a house and being a mother figure actually is a lot of work.
  • This Is Reality: Critic says at the end that while many girls have princess visions of innocence and femininity, he says that sooner or later, it will be time to grow up and time to look up at more responsible, grown-up and realistic mature role models.
  • invokedValues Dissonance: Critic notes that Ariel is a controversial figure that's being called a man-crazy whiny teenager and a poor role model, but at the time, she was considered different from past princesses because she was more headstrong and independent. He also points out how the role of the first few Disney princesses was limited by the place of women in society then, but then goes on to explain that's not an excuse for today. He also notes that Walt Disney saw Cinderella as a role model because she had to work hard in life waiting to get rewarded for her efforts, even in the face of such nasty characters.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: The thumbnail depicts Critic uncomfortably wearing Belle's ballroom gown.
