This episode has examples of

  • Actor Allusion: When Avery interrupts Fozzie's act about the banana in the ear, they get into an exchange of "huh" "yeah" "huh, yeah..." which was a signature routine Avery did with his comedy partner Jack Burns, who was one of the writers for the series. After Waldorf & Statler applaud him for the routine, Avery addresses Burns, telling him he knew the banana bit was funny.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: When Avery is a warrior set to fight a monster, played by Sweetums...
Avery: Are you the Monster of the Moors?
Sweetums: No, I'm Little Bo Peep! What's it to ya?
Avery: [to Kermit] Seems to have an overactive pituitary gland.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • When Miss Piggy tells Scooter that she needs his help because she's given her love to Kermit and he shows no sign of returning it, Scooter says he'll get it back for her and asks where Kermit keeps it.
    • Sir Avery's response to the Dramatic Thunder heralding the arrival of the Monster of the Moors is to wonder if it's going to rain.
  • Dramatic Thunder: The arrival of the Monster of the Moors is heralded by a peal of thunder.
  • Harsh Word Impact: Avery and Sweetums choose to battle by insults. With each insult they hurl at each other, the combatants grow weaker, until Avery is knocked on the ground. Avery, however, claims it wasn't the insult that knocked him down so much as Sweetums' breath.
  • Irony: The Mayhem's rendition of "Tenderly" is anything but.
  • Killer Gorilla: Bunsen is showing his latest invention, a gorilla detector, unaware that a gorilla is thrashing the set behind him. When the gorilla starts attacking him, Bunsen assures the audience that it couldn't be a gorilla, because the detector would have gone off.
  • Mondegreen Gag:
Wayne: [singing] Some enchanted evening, you may meet a stranger...
    [Gorgon Heap enters.]
Wayne: [singing] You may meet a stranger...
    [Gorgon Heap eats Wayne.]
Wanda: He said "meet," not "eat"! [Cries.]
    Gorgon Heap: Well, sorry...!
  • Mythology Gag: Rowlf sings "May You Always" to a framed photo of Lassie, whom Rowlf had a crush on during his days on The Jimmy Dean Show.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Piggy's scheme is to make Kermit jealous by letting him think that she and Avery are having a thing going on. It seemingly works...until Kermit reveals that Scooter let the plan slip and was just going along with it to get it over with.
  • Stand-In Portrait: One skit has Avery as a security guard at a museum, sitting next to what he thinks is a painting of Fozzie. In actuality, it is Fozzie, standing behind a frame. Whenever Avery isn't looking, Fozzie tries to steal his lunch.
  • Volleying Insults: When Avery and the Monster of the Moors decide to do battle, Avery gets to choose the weaponry. His weapon of choice: insults.

Waldorf: Eh, you gotta give 'em credit...
Statler: Yeah? Well, why's that?
Waldorf: Well, they're gonna keep on doin' it 'til they get it right.
