Original air date: 6/25/2022

Production code: 118a

When Pete gets into an accident while cleaning the gutters, the McGees have to pull out all the stops to cover his hospital bill. Even when they do succeed, they find a nasty surprise waiting for them.

Tropes:

  • All for Nothing: The McGees successfully raise enough money to pay the hospital bill, only to be evicted from their home for failing to pay the mortgage.
  • Annoying Patient: Pete acts like a whiny baby while he's laid up at home with a broken arm, annoying Scratch with his many demands.
  • Artistic License:
    • It would be unrealistic for the insurance company to cover a tiny amount of the hospital bill, in real life, they would cover most or the entire bill.
    • The prices on the bill are WAY too pricey. In real life, the prices would've been less expensive than that.
  • Artistic License – Medicine: There's no such thing as a Z-Ray and a Q-Ray.
  • Broke Episode: For the McGees.
  • Caught Coming Home Late: Scratch catches Sharon, who comes back home late at night while he's waiting like an angry parent. She even accidentally calls him mom.
  • A Day in Her Apron: While Sharon does gigs to raise the money for the hospital bill, Scratch offers to take care of the house, saying it'll be "easy-peasy, McGeesies." Between cleaning after Molly's cupcake baking, cooking, and taking care of a needy and demanding Pete while he's healing, Scratch is soon run ragged.
  • Diabolus ex Machina: The McGee family have earned enough money to pay the hospital bill, they have a group hug, and the episode is about to end. Then, they learn that they forgot to pay the mortgage and lose the house.
  • Doom It Yourself: Pete opts to clean the house gutters himself instead of paying Irving the Illusionist 300 dollars to do it for him. The rest of the episode is about Pete's family trying to earn enough money to pay the resulting hospital bill.
  • Downer Ending: The McGee family have to leave their home, and a lonely and miserable Scratch stays behind.
  • Fallen-on-Hard-Times Job: Sharon has to take lots of demeaning jobs to earn enough money for the bill. It is clear that she suffers every moment.
  • Forgot About His Powers: When Scratch is multitasking in the kitchen, he grows multiple arms to try and get the job done, only for him to literally fall apart. He could've made this easier by using his telekinesis, which he used when helping Molly with her cupcakes.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The hospital bill is briefly seen. Anyone who pauses the episode at the right moment can tell they were charged $700.00 for the ambulance; $20,000.00 for the surgery; $1,500.00 for the cast; 891.90 for the X-ray; $899.71 for each of the two Z-rays; $763.27 for the Q-ray; $2,000.00 for the ultrasound; and $60.00 for the gauze, making it a total of $27,714.59 out of which the insurance only covered 49 cents.
  • Freudian Slip: Sharon accidentally does this when Scratch catches her coming home late after a her latest Gig Pig job.
Scratch: Do you know what time it is, young lady?
    Sharon: Mom! I mean, Scratch!
  • Funny Background Event: Pete is shown struggling to clean the gutters outside the window, eventually falling down.
  • I'm Not Doing That Again: After the McGees earned all the money for the hospital bill, Scratch admits how hard it was to take care of the whole family and said he didn't wanna go through that again due to all the stress and the amount of chores he went through.
  • Lethal Chef: Molly's first batch of cupcakes taste awful because she mistook salt for sugar. They're still bought by the science club, who launch them from a catapult.
  • Man-Eating Plant: Darryl has to sell his collection of carnivorous plants. One of them even attacks its new owner.
  • Shockingly Expensive Bill: The plot gets started when Pete hurts himself cleaning the gutters, and the hospital bill is too expensive for the McGees to afford. Pete is sure their insurance will cover most of it, until Sharon reveals that the bill is after insurance.
  • Situational Hand Switch: Pete is revealed to be left-handed; since his left arm is broken, he must use his right hand to eat, but cannot.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Irving the Illusionist, the street magician Molly hates, only appears in one scene showing up at the McGees' door offering to clean the house gutters, but his appearance is the reason for the rest of the episode occurring. He sees the gutters are dirty, and Pete turns him down to try and clean them himself, only to get injured. This kicks off the main issue of the McGees trying to raise money to pay the bill. Because the McGees forgot to pay their mortgage as a result of trying to earn money for the hospital bill, the impact of Irving's role lasts through the next episode as well.
  • Something We Forgot: In all the rush to pay the hospital bill, the McGees forgot to pay their mortgage and are evicted.
  • Sudden Downer Ending: The family managed to raise enough money for the hospital bill...only to find out that they forgot to pay the mortgage for their house and are forced to move after it got repossessed by the bank, leaving Scratch miserable and alone.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • When Pete says he's sure the insurance will cover most of the bill, Sharon says the bill is after insurance and shows that they have to pay $27,714.10 and the insurance only paid 49 cents.
    • The episode begins with the McGees unpacking the last moving box, with Sharon announcing that they are finally here to stay. By the end, they have lost their home.
  • Wham Shot: The usual "The Ghost And Molly McGee" title card ending shot is suddenly interrupted by hammering, and we quickly cut away to a "For Sale" sign being hammered in by the realtor Candace Green in front of the McGees' house!

Out of House and Home

The McGees have successfully paid the hospital bill after an episode's worth of hard work, all seems well, and the end card even shows up... only to be interrupted by the house being reposessed, as they forgot to pay their mortgage. This leaves the family homeless and Scratch all alone.

How well does it match the trope?
