Recap / The Boondocks - S3 E1: "It's a Black President, Huey Freeman"

Go To

A German documentary filmmaker (Werner Herzog) follows the Freeman family and other Woodcrest residents from the election to the inauguration of America's first black president, as flashbacks resembles the coverage of the documentary, including their expressions and personal reactions: Huey is indifferent; Robert and Riley are supportive of Obama; Tom worries about Sarah's sexual reaction to Obama; Thugnificent joins the celebrity bandwagon after realizing he was oblivious to the political campaign; and Uncle Ruckus contributes his critical racist antics.

Episode Tropes:

  • But Now I Must Go: "Operation: Exodus", which is Huey's plan to flee the United States as he feels he doesn't belong anymore. He plans to flee with Ruckus, but only because he's obviously too young to leave himself.
  • Call-Back: From Season 1, there's mention about Huey's belief that Jesus was black, Ronald Reagan was the devil, and the government is lying about 9/11. Huey's complex plan (also using an "Operation" moniker) also falls through because he is left without a ride, much like "Operation: Black Steel".
  • Department of Redundancy Department:
Werner Herzog: So then, now that it looks like Obama is going to win, as a black African-American negro, are you merely excited, or are you extremely excited that everything is going to change forever?
  • Disproportionate Retribution: When Huey expressed his indifference on Obama being president, everybody around him turned out to be bigots as they start to insult and criticize him for it to the point he gets ostracized.
  • Enemy Mine: Ruckus defends Huey when an angry mob swarms the latter over his opinion on Obama. They agree to leave the country together since Huey has the money and Ruckus has the ride, then going their separate ways.
  • Entitled Bastard: Robert is so persistent in his quest to meet Obama, using his "Civil Rights heroism" as a crutch, that he disowns Huey and throws him to the wolves in order to keep his reputation.
  • Fantastically Indifferent: Huey finds the news of the first black president of the United States to not be a big deal, responding with a simple "Eh". Too bad the people around him took the response a little too personally.
Citizen: "Eh"? What's "Eh" supposed to mean?
    Huey: Just means "Eh".
  • Framing Device: This episode is told in a Mockumentary style as a German filmmaker films Woodcrest reactions to the 2008 election.
  • I Have No Son!: Robert disowns Huey after the public shuns the latter for his apathy towards Obama's imminent win. This is mostly to cover his own ass so he can still gain VIP access to the inauguration.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Feeling like he has no place in America anymore, Huey decides to flee the country.. with Ruckus. Earlier, Ruckus defended Huey against an angry mob because he similarly isn't excited for Obama's inauguration. This however is more of an Enemy Mine scenario where they leave with each other out of opportunity (Huey has gas money and Ruckus can drive) rather than some type of respect.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Robert thinks that his presence in multiple major Civil Rights era victories entitles him to meet Obama as another victory for African-American culture. Naturally, things don't exactly go as planned, but notably, Obama did personally invite him to the inauguration.
  • Status Quo Is God: "Operation: Exodus" is compromised because the Secret Service finds Ruckus' bricks he planned to hurl at Obama and arrest him, leaving Huey without a ride.
  • Take That!: To the Obama hype of late 2008 to early 2009. This pokes fun at Democrats (both white and black) who voted for Obama for all the wrong reasons and Republicans who saw Obama as an evil man.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Huey and Ruckus, naturally, when they try fleeing America together. Ruckus wants to go to a European country like Norway or Ireland, but Huey wants to try Africa, specifically the Ivory Coast.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Uncle Ruckus bawls in tears on the night of Obama's victory and cries out "Why, Lord?".
  • Western Terrorists: Huey is labeled as a "Domestic Terrorist".
