Recap / The Batman S 2 E 8 JTV

Go To

Annoyed with the lack of attention from the Gotham public, Joker starts his own TV show, "Me and the Mayor." In spite of the attempts of the Gotham police to protect him, the Mayor is kidnapped and sprayed with Joker venom. Trying to put a stop to Joker's spree, Ellen Yin's new partner, Cash Tankinson, becomes a second regular. Can Batman save both of them and all of Gotham from this worst of all programming?

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Played for Drama with Cash and Yin after Joker announces the former as his next "co-star". When Yin warns Cash not to get emotionally involved in the case, he brings up Ethan, but gets his name wrong.
Yin: If you let this get personal, it will impair your ability to do your job!
Cash: Hey, come on, Yin, doesn't some part of you wanna slap that grin off of Joker's face? At least for Burnett?
Yin: Bennett. (to herself) I'm not losing another partner to this madman…
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Joker laughs when he sees Cash and decides to make him the "star" of his next show, Shades of Blue.
  • Break the Haughty: By the end of the episode, getting caught by Joker and gassed leaves Cash ill and applying for a desk job.
  • Chirping Crickets: The Joker lampshades this at the beginning of the episode.
The Joker: Every time I bring my brand of funny to Gotham, the only sound I hear is: [holds up a toy cricket in one hand, Beat as he shoots an unamused look at the camera, then smashes it with the other]
  • Cowboy Cop: Cash, but he seems to learn a lesson at the end.
  • Death by Genre Savviness: The mayor has a police entourage protecting him, since he knows that the clown isn't joking. Joker infiltrates by posing as one of the cops.
  • Do Not Adjust Your Set: Joker does this with his “channel”, JTV, to all of Gotham.
  • Dressing as the Enemy: The Joker approaches the Mayor by disguising himself as one of the cops protecting him.
  • Fearless Fool: Cash. He goes to catch the Joker acting like he's an action-movie hero. To no one's surprise (except his), he gets nabbed.
  • Frozen Face: It's the Joker. Naturally, both Cash and the mayor are sporting these by the end of the episode. They get better.
  • Heroes Gone Fishing: In the opening of the episode, Bruce is simply at home watching a basketball game on TV, which he invites Alfred to join him to watch, until Joker hijacks the airwaves.
  • Latex Perfection: The Joker's mask, which he uses to pose as a member of the police.
  • Mythology Gag: The Joker's final "JTV" broadcast has a couple of references to the 1960s Batman series:
    • Joker gives a cliffhanger narration ending in "Same Joker crime, same Joker channel".
    • The fight between Batman and Joker's mooks is broadcast with cartoonish "POW", "BIFF", "SPLAT" Hit Flash overlays.
  • Right Behind Me: The Joker clearly likes this one; Cash thinks he's caught him, until the villain asks him if he knows just who's filming him. (Cue Oh, Crap! from Cash followed by Judy belting him.)
  • Tempting Fate: The mayor scoffs that Joker must be kidding about being able to get past the Gotham police. Not two minutes later, he gets grabbed.
  • Third-Person Person: Cash, something that Yin lampshades.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Cash, again (though he is eventually rescued). As if going after Joker solo wasn't bad enough, Yin calls and outright tells him that he's being filmed live and Cash doesn't even look for the camera, allowing Judy to blindside him nearly a minute later.
  • Unwilling Suspension: The Mayor and Cash at the end of the episode.
