Recap / Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 S 4 E 21 Return Of Savanti Part 2

Go To

Savanti Romero turns up and captures Renet, intent to use her in his evil plan to change the history of the planet forever. Now it's up to the Turtles to stop him and save their entire history.

This episode provides examples of

  • Adaptational Alternate Ending: In Tales of the TMNT, volume 1, issue 7, the comic this and the previous episodes are based on, after they found the Time Sceptre inside the fish they caught, the Turtles agreed to not let the massive fish they caught to go to waste and decided to finish dinner before going back home. Here, Mike suggests eating before returning, but the other Turtles and Renet shoot death glares at Mike and he changes his mind.
  • Artistic License – Paleontology: A very strange example. Raph is extremely derisive when he sees a Velociraptor. This would be a very realistic reaction to someone who's familiar with, say, Jurassic Park's raptors, as real ones were much smaller and covered in colorful plumage. However, there appears to have been some disjoint between writers and artists, because visibly the raptors look basically like the Deinonychus from the previous episode.
  • Body Horror: The Teaser shows that Savanti originally looked quite human. Lord Simultaneous turned him into his current form before banishing him.
  • Brick Joke: In Part 1, Splinter told April he was better off not knowing what the Turtles were getting into. At the end of this episode, Don says similarly to her, which annoys her even more.
  • Character Narrator: Savanti.
  • Clothing Damage: After the Turtles and Renet have been in the Cretaceous period for 3 months their outfits and accessories are falling apart and have been patched up with locally sourced materials.
  • Compressed Hair: Underneath Renet's costume we discover she has waist-length blonde hair. Even accounting for 3 months growth, her hair should be far too long to fit snugly under her blue skin-tight head-piece
  • The Day the Dinosaurs Died: Donnie observes the approaching meteor that will cause the extinction of the dinosaurs in a few months. Though the Turtles and Renet stay in the past long enough for extinction to be only a month away, thankfully they get out in time.
  • Delaying Action: Raph, Don and Mikey keep Savanti busy so Leo can rescue Renet and the Time Scepter. When that fails, Leo says he'll keep Savanti busy so Don can do it instead.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Discussed. When Donatello projects they have two or three months before it hits, Leonardo laments going out like that after all their adventures.
  • Dumb Blonde: Renet is revealed to be blonde.
  • Facepalm: Leo does this again when Don reveals that the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs is on the way.
  • I'm Standing Right Here: During the climactic showdown, we get this:
Don: We don't have time for this! Leo, quick, grab the Time Scepter!
    Renet: Hey!
    Don: (Beat) And save Renet!
  • Indy Ploy: Leo is trying to come up with a plan to rescue Renet while avoiding the Velociraptors. Mike attempts to distract them to buy some time, using chips, which backfires, Leo decides to switch to plan B... which he hasn't come up with yet.
Leo: Looks like we're switching to plan B.
    Mike: What's plan B?
Leo: I'll let you know as soon as I come up with it.
  • Killed Off for Real: Savanti is killed for good when he is struck by his own magic.
  • Origins Episode: Savanti's narration includes scenes of the first time he tried to steal the Time Scepter and was banished to the past.
  • Product Placement: The end of the episode sees the Turtles wearing new prehistoric-themed gear and having new weapons to promote the "Paleo Patrol" subline that was in stores at the time of the episode's airing. It's ironic that a brief two-minute sequence to end the episode ended up being the only screen time to promote an entire sub-toyline.
  • Raptor Attack: Savanti has a pack of Velociraptor guarding his bone fortress.
  • Shout-Out: Mikey knows full well that Velociraptors are dangerous. He saw Jurassic Park three times!
  • The Snack Is More Interesting: After spending three months trapped in the Cretaceous period, when Mike finally finds the time sceptre inside the fish he just caught, he insists that they at least finish dinner before going back home. He backs down when the others object.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: When the Turtles need a plan to get past the pack of Velociraptors, Mikey tries to distract the raptors by throwing his chips brought with him at Raptors so they will eat them. However, after Mikey throws the chips the Velociraptors turn to them instead. As Don points out that the Velociraptors won't eat chips because they are carnivores.
  • Time Skip: The last part of the episode takes place 3 months after the Turtles' have fought Savanti.
  • You Do Not Want To Know: Donatello to April when she's about to ask what happened.
April: Master Splinter, you're never gonna believe this, but...
Splinter: Stop. Please. It is probably better that I do not know.
(The turtles and Renet step out of a portal seconds later)
    April: I, but you... how...?
Don: April, it's probably better you don't know.
    Splinter: (quietly, to April) See?
    April: (crosses arms) Hmph!
