Recap / Stargirl 2020 S 2 E 02 Summer School Chapter Two

Go To

Jennie is introduced to the JSA, while Shade comes back to town.

Tropes:

  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Justified. On her 18th birthday, Jennie gets sent out of her foster home as law requires, while her former foster mother criticizes her perfectionism. She is also left figuring out her next path independently. The only gift she receives is a lozenge box containing her father’s items including the ring.
  • Abusive Parents: Yolanda's parents continue to show their shunning of her by enrolling her in summer school "to keep her out of trouble" even though she got straight A's.
  • Always Someone Better: Courtney originally sees Jennie as this, and uses it as an excuse to distrust her. Pat helps her get her head on straight by pointing out that they're actually quite similar.
  • And There Was Much Rejoicing: The episode opens with Bobbie Burman celebrating her captors' deaths with wine and trashing her perfect kitchen before finally leaving Blue Valley. Unfortunately, Cindy shows up to stop her in her tracks.
  • Answer Cut: When the summer school teacher wonders where Rick is, it cuts to him going to Grundy's hiding place with more food for him.
  • But Now I Must Go: The episode ends with Jennie leaving (without saying good-bye) in order to continue her search for her brother.
  • Demonic Possession: Eclipso is able to hijack Cindy's body so he can feed on her stepmother. Cindy is able to reassert control, but only after he's finished.
  • Emotion Eater: Eclipso influences Cindy's stepmother to act on her negative emotions, then feeds on the evil in her soul.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Cindy is visibly horrified after Eclipso kills her stepmother, murmuring that she never wanted her dead.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Cindy is starting to realize this as Eclipso temporarily takes over her body to feed on her stepmother.
  • I Will Find You: Jennie's drive to find the Green Lantern battery is fueled by the hope it will lead her to her wayward brother.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Courtney is needlessly abrasive to Jennie out of jealousy but she does make a few good points in being mistrustful. Mainly that Jennie chose to break into the house to steal the lantern rather than approach more diplomatically, with her only defense about doing so being that the lantern was stolen to start with; she doesn't actually admit any wrongdoing in the action or the fight that ensued from it. Courtney also notes that Pat's belief that Jennie is telling the truth because Only the Chosen May Wield isn't exactly the best proof given that Courtney is able to wield the Cosmic Staff without being the daughter of Starman.
  • Mutual Envy: Courtney is immediately jealous that Jennie is the daughter of a superhero as she wished she were, but Courtney has what Jennie wants most: a family. They both get over it, eventually.
  • Mythology Gag: Swift claims to be a dealer in antiques and collectibles. In the comics, this was the profession of his friend Jack Knight, aka Starman.
    • Pat mentions he thought that Green Lantern had to recharge his ring every 24 hours, which the comics incarnation did.
  • Phlebotinum Overload: Jennie's emotions cause the Green Lantern battery to overload and explode, but she's able to absorb most of the energy back into herself so it only leaves a small crater instead of blowing up the city.
  • Properly Paranoid: Barb quickly senses something is not right about Richard Swift, who dropped in out of nowhere and wants to purchase the belongings of a late ISA villain. She has Pat size him up, and he is discovered to be the Shade.
  • Psychological Projection: Courtney is so caught up in the fact Jennie has the Justice Society in her blood that she doesn't realize how insensitive it is to tell an orphan she has "everything".
  • Reduced to Dust: Cindy's stepmother is reduced to ash as a result of Eclipso feeding on her.
  • Selective Enforcement: Jennie gets off much easier than Courtney for the fight that happened even though she was the one that broke in and attacked Courtney.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Jennie's orphanage is named "The Ordway Home For Children" after classic writer/artist Jerry Ordway, who co-created Jade.
    • When Rick doesn't show up to summer school, the teacher says, "Bueller? Bueller?"
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Having a superhero battle inside a suburban house with lasers and energy blasts flying around will result in lots and lots of damaged property. Needless to say, Pat and Barbara aren't happy when they see the aftermath of Courtney and Jennie's little fight in the kitchen.
