Recap / Sonic Boom S 1 E 46 No Robots Allowed

Go To

The forty-sixth episode of the first season of Sonic Boom.

Dr. Eggman gets in trouble with the archipelago homeowner's association when they finds that he's been harboring robots, which is a direct violation of their jurisdiction has over his lair. Eggman tries to hide his robots from the association during a dinner they have, which isn't easy when a lightning storm causes his robots' AI to go berserk.

This episode provides examples of:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: The lightning from the rainstorm hits the solar panels in Eggman's lair, causing Eggman's robots to become overpowered and go berserk when he tries to hide them from the archipelago homeowner's association.
  • Apathetic Citizens: This episode and a few others establish that the loosely-formed government of the archipelago could try to give Eggman more trouble than they do, but they're fine with his village-destroying plots as long as he doesn't specifically flout their rules.
  • Epic Fail: When Team Sonic comes to an ice cream cart, the heat wave causes the ice cream to melt instantly. To add insult to injury, the vendor refuses to refund Team Sonic's money.
  • Heat Wave: This episode begins with one hitting Bygone Island. Team Sonic cools themselves down by using the rotary fan from Tails' Tailsmobile, which creates a swirling indoor air current, while Eggman installs solar panels to give himself free electricity so he doesn't have to pay for air conditioning.
  • Hollywood Mirage:
    • Team Sonic goes to Unnamed Village to beat the heat. Knuckles comes across what looks like an ice cream cart, but when he runs towards it, it turns out to be a mirage. When Team Sonic comes to a real ice cream cart, the ice cream melts in an instant and the vendor refuses to refund their money, at which point Knuckles complains that they should have gone to the mirage.
    • Later in the episode, Knuckles decides to go for a dip in the water, only for the water to turn out to be a mirage as well. The ice cream vendor then comes across Knuckles, who asks him if he's a mirage as well. The vendor nods his head "yes", and Knuckles takes some ice cream from him and eats it. When the radio announces that a rainstorm is coming to break the heat wave, the vendor says "Looks like I'm out of the mirage business!" and disappears.
  • Lampshade Wearing: A non-alcohol example; during the montage of Eggman, Orbot and Cubot hiding the other robots, Eggman places a lampshade on Burnbot to try to disguise him as a lamp.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Team Sonic arrives at Eggman's lair to investigate about his malfunctioning robots, but Sonic's trademark "Egg-(insert word here)" streak runs out of steam.
    Sonic: Hold it, Eggy-mo-beggy!
(Sonic's teammates give him quizzical looks)
Sonic: What? You think it's easy coming up with new ones all the time?
  • Loophole Abuse: After the archipelago homeowner's association decides to evict Eggman from his lair for harboring robots, Eggman begs them to reconsider, saying his robots are more than just machines, they're his art. Upon hearing this, the association decides to allow Eggman to keep his robots after all, since art is acceptable, provided it's not displayed on one's lawn. Upon hearing this, Eggman assures the association that he'd never do that... just before activating the self-destruct mechanisms on a Motobug and a Crab Bot in his lawn.
  • Pie in the Face: This episode ends with Orbot hitting Eggman in the face with a souffle.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Eggman, instead of using electricity to cool himself off, has Orbot and Cubot fan him... until he gets gets the bright idea from Orbot to use solar panels for free electricity before ordering him and Cubot to build them. Cubot is less than pleased.
Cubot: Great idea, Orbot. This is much less work. By the way, I'm being sarcastic.
Orbot: Really? I had no idea.
    Cubot: You didn't?
  • Shout-Out: The opening scene of this episode has Sticks taking Amy for a ride on a bicycle within a swirling indoor air current while saying "I'll get you, my pretty!", then spoofing the famous "flying past the moon" scene from ET The Extraterrestrial, down to the music (well, close to it). Mind you, this is in the span of five seconds.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: When an overheated Eggman uses Orbot and Cubot to cool himself down, Cubot suggests turning on the air conditioning. Eggman turns down this solution due to the high cost of his electricity bills, but instead gets an idea to install solar panels from Orbot.
  • Wily Walrus; Zig-zagged with Lady Walrus. While she is one of the innocent townspeople whom Team Sonic must save from Dr. Eggman, there are times when the townspeople turn against Team Sonic, and she is quick to join them. Her most villainous role is in this episode, where she is part of the snooty homeowner's association that tries to evict Eggman from his lair for owning robots.
