Recap / Parks and Recreation - S02 E21

Go To

Ron: April was supposed to be the moat that kept the citizen barbarians away from Swanson castle. Instead, she blew up the castle and stabbed me in the face.

Mark asks Leslie if he should ask Ann to move in with him and informs her that he intends to marry Ann. Leslie is happy for them but is also not sure how she feels.

Meanwhile, due to a clerical error, April has mistakenly scheduled ninety-three meetings for Ron for March 31, and that's today. He enlists the aid of April, Andy, Leslie, and Ann to help handle them, while telling Jerry that he is free to go home early. During her first meeting, Leslie learns from Bill Haggerty of the Pawnee Historical Society that a historic town monument, the Turnbill Mansion, is soon to be altered by its new renter, the former Miss Pawnee beauty pageant winner Jessica Wicks. Leslie and Tom leave to meet with her at the mansion, where Jessica is planning a birthday party for her extremely old husband, the wealthy Nick Newport Sr., founder of the Sweetums candy company. Leslie is shocked Jessica has already made several alterations, such as hanging up nude portraits of herself and painting the floor.

Jessica reveals her plans to demolish an old gazebo in the backyard of Turnbill Mansion, the site of a historic wedding between a Native American Wamapoke chief and a white woman, which became a "bloodbath" when knowledge of the wedding became public. Under Leslie's orders, Tom chains Leslie to the front gate to prevent construction crews from entering. However, she mistakenly assumes the gate opens from the middle, allowing the crews to enter right past Leslie and demolish the gazebo. Eventually, Ann and Mark arrive to free her, and Leslie finally reveals to Tom the true source of her anxiety — Mark's intentions to marry Ann. Leslie feels emotional confusion over this fact. On the one hand, she wants her friends to be happy. On the other hand, she used to have romantic feelings for Mark, feels insecure about being single, and is worried about losing her two friends. In response, Tom assures her she has nothing to worry about, thus inspiring Leslie to crash and ruin Jessica's party.

As Leslie deals with Jessica, Ron and the others deal with their meetings: April acts as uninterested as possible, Andy makes promises to people against Ron's wishes, and Ann provides several medical consults after revealing she is really a nurse and not a parks and recreation department employee. Meanwhile, Andy, despite his growing interest in April, feels uncomfortable about the eight-year age difference between them, further upsetting April on a difficult day. Ron, who views the many meetings as an utter nightmare, calls in the others during the middle of the day for a progress report and angrily berates April for her mistake. After all the meetings, April arranges her own meeting with Ron, where she announces she is quitting. When Andy learns of this, he convinces Ron to give April a second chance to learn from her mistake. Ron goes to April's house and convinces her to come back by telling her about Andy's compliments. April then reveals that she knows Ron is Duke Silver since her mother is a huge fan, and that she recognized him the first time that they met. On her first day back, April successfully scares off someone wanting to meet with Ron by scheduling absurd meeting dates and times such as June 50th, the "one-teenth" of "march-tember" and 2:65 PM. Ron gives her an approving smile and nod while watching from his office.

Tropes

  • Berserk Button:
    • Messing with the history of Pawnee is one for Leslie.
    • Having to deal with so many people for a whole day is one for Ron. The fact that it resulted from a big flub-up on April's part makes it worse.
  • Character Development: Mark, after having been a swinging bachelor for his whole adult life, decides he really wants to marry Ann.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Leslie, when informed that Ron has 93 meetings scheduled and needs her help, offers to "rustle up" 7 more meetings to make an even 100.
    • Leslie says, "I am not a stick in the mud. I just want to stop a party from happening."
  • Did Not Think This Through: Leslie tied herself to a gate to try to stop it from opening... only to realize the gate did not open in the middle.
  • Eskimos Aren't Real: It turns out that March 31st actually exists. April didn't see that one coming.
  • Exact Words: Andy tries to play with this for a woman who asks him something in a meeting. He ends up saying yes after making various agreeing noises, because she knew he had to say yes.
  • Foreshadowing: The episode's title is "94 Meetings", even though April states, in the beginning, Ron only has 93 meetings to attend to. There was an extra meeting for Ron and April in the end.
  • Gold Digger: Jessica Wicks, which Tom even lampshades. Tom himself plays with this, as he states he has plans to get with Jessica once her very old Meal Ticket passes away and describes himself as a Gold Digger-Digger.
  • I Have No Idea What I'm Doing: In a meeting, April says various words she heard around the office to a woman, who agrees wholeheartedly, and then April reveals she had no idea what she said to the camera.
  • In-Universe Factoid Failure: April thought March 31st didn't exist.
  • It's All About Me: Leslie grabs the cup of coffee that Ann had bought for Mark, and after Ann tells her it was for Mark, Leslie complains that it needs more sugar.
  • My Greatest Failure: April has this reaction to having accidentally scheduled the 93 meetings for Ron on the same day.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: It's very clear how hard the 93 meetings hit both April and Ron. Ron suddenly becomes enraged and scary, while April becomes more insecure and skittish around him.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Ron's Duke Silver persona just has him wearing sunglasses, a fedora and a suit, and he takes great measures to keep it hidden. April recognized him immediately after meeting him, but curiously, her mother (who owns all of Duke's albums) did not. She claims not to, anyway; she is suspiciously fangirling over "April's boss".
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: Ron assembles the group of people that can help at the moment to help him with the meetings: Andy, Ann and April. Leslie was also on board, but she becomes consumed at the first one trying to save the gazebo.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: April quits after all the meetings, due to having a My Greatest Failure reaction to it.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: April knew about Ron's secret musical career ever since they met, but she hid it from everybody.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: April quit her job out of shame, but Ron (thanks to a little convincing from Andy) convinces her to return and to learn from her mistakes.
  • Title, Please!: One of the few Parks & Rec episodes to avert this and actually put the episode title on screen.
  • Villain Has a Point: As she points out, Jessica submitted the necessary paperwork to demolish the Gazebo openly and well in advance. The time to make an issue of it has long passed.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: April's parents are bubbly and nice, the complete opposite of their two daughters.
  • Wham Line:
    Ron: Goodbye, "Zuzu".
    April: Bye, Duke Silver.
[Ron freezes, then turns back toward April in shock]
April: My mom has all your albums. I recognized you the day we met.
Ron: And you haven't told anyone?
    April: No.
    Ron: Good girl.
