Fergus worries about his new son's future and quality of life after the baby is bullied by the children of superstitious Protestants who live on the Ridge. Claire performs surgery on Tom's hand, but what seems to be a temporary ceasefire between the two ends with Tom more standoffish at Claire than before. Meanwhile, Malva takes in interesting in all of the Frasers, including Young Ian.

Tropes

  • All Witches Have Cats: Conversed. Claire jokingly assures Tom that Adso the cat is not her familiar. Tom tells her he knows that, because despite being a devout Christian he is also an educated man and does not believe she is a witch.
  • As the Good Book Says...: Tom reads the Bible instead of taking ether during his surgery. Jamie gives him whiskey to help with the pain.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Allan is angered when Tom beats Malva.
  • Don't Make Me Take My Belt Off!: After Claire operates on Tom's hand and it heals, Tom resumes beating Malva.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Fergus mistakenly thinks Marsali's attack from Brown's men correlates to their son's dwarfism, adding to his guilt about not being there and feeling useless. Even after Claire assures him he is not at fault, Fergus is still upset and continues to drink heavily.
  • Food Slap:
    • At the peak of Marsali and Fergus’s fight, Marsali pours Fergus's alcohol over his head.
    • Fergus throws his drink in Mrs. McGregor’s face when she calls his son grotesque and a curse.
  • The Freakshow: Fergus's childhood friend, Luc, was a dwarf who was killed in an alley. The madame of the brothel sold his body to a physician who cut him up and sold the parts for divination. Fergus fears this or other unpleasant fates may happen to Henri-Christian, but Claire tells him they will not let that happen.
  • Get Out!: During their fight, Marsali tells Fergus to leave their home and come back when he acts like the man she married.
  • Giving Radio to the Romans: Brianna uses her engineering skills to create a spinning wheel for Marsali.
  • Hates Being Touched: Claire thinks Tom does not like being touched by women or even touched at all. Jamie tells her it is probably from time in prison when men yearned for a woman’s touch.
  • Internal Reveal: Marsali tells Fergus she killed Lionel Brown. Fergus does not take the news well and tells Marsali he does not need a woman to protect him.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Jamie stops Fergus from committing suicide after Jamie witnesses Fergus slash his arm.
  • Kill It with Water: At the beginning of the episode, Henri-Christian is in a basket going down a river after a group of superstitious fisherfolk boys believe he will float. Their parents told them if Henri-Christian floats, he is from the devil. Roger angrily tells them the baby floated because he is in a basket, baptizes Henri-Christian in front of them, and drives them off with threats of being Dragged Off to Hell.
  • Language Drift:
    • Claire calls Tom a “masochist” when he would rather suffer than use her ether. He isn't familiar with the word.
    • Marsali asks Brianna why she says “vroom” to Jemmy when they play with his wooden airplane. Brianna claims it is a sound Jemmy makes when he plays with the toys and quickly changes the subject.
  • Mama's Baby, Papa's Maybe: Discussed: Claire states that if Malva is 18 years old, she would have been conceived when Tom was in prison.
  • Mirror Scare: Claire sees Lionel in her mirror telling her she is of the devil. She is frightened and almost takes some ether to calm her nerves.
  • Missing Mom: Malva tells Young Ian her mother was hanged as a witch.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: After Claire fixes Tom Christie’s hand, he goes back to abusing Malva.
  • Skip the Anesthetic: Tom decides to forgo Claire’s ether because he believes it is the devil’s work and decides to read from the Bible. Claire tells him it will be painful, and Jamie gives him a glass of whiskey.
  • Symbolic Baptism: After saving Henri-Christian from a potential drowning, Roger quickly performs a baptism in front of the boys, including Germain, to prove he is not of the devil.
  • You Are a Credit to Your Race: Tom tells Claire how Jamie is not like the other Highlanders because he is a gentleman and comes from a noble family.
