My Superhero City | Season 03, Episode 04: When The Nighttime Comes I Close My Eyes

Average Super City Citizen: Alright, give me all your money bitch. Walking around town looking like you do...seriously pisses me off.
Nitram: Eight hours...The invasion and overall taking of the alternate Super City must be done in eight hours, at least sixty percent of the city under our full control or a full retreat order will be given....With the rebels still operational we can't afford to fight a protracted battle on one side only for our escape to be taken. We are bringing all of our heavy hitters to this fight, those left behind will only be able to hold against whatever Mikael might throw at us for that amount of time.
Sam: ...But, leaving aside power or ruthlessness, be ready to give it all, this is our home, and our people to protect, but beyond all that, do as you must to live, not just to survive. Do as your own hearts tell you, and don't lose sight on who you are, because if that happens, victory might end up costing more than you can imagine
Marcus: The Saint - the very same Saint with minor differences - did all that. Set up a whole damn world willing to invade ours. Am I...more or less similarly capable? I was made as a copy of The Saint and—-Am I similarly capable of that kind of monstrous behavior?
Cole: OKAY EVERYONE! I don't care whether we started as friends or foes, the Saviors have made ONE crucial mistake. They violated this world, and that they can get away with it. Let's unite in one common purpose; to defend the world we've come to call home. Resist! AND! BITE!! Never surrender, let the Saviors end this invasion broken upon our sacred shores!!
Leon Aquatos: ...we fight. We fight for Thalassa's glory. For our world's dignity. And for the thousands—no, millions of innocents—that have been declared war against by this group of extremists. We know the risks. Those who can and will fight, let us stand together. Differences put aside. As one.
AntiSaint: Oh, I doubt that. He probably didn't tell you this (God knows he barely tells anyone anything), but he already tried to kill me. Nearly blew me to kingdom come. Without so much as a word. And now he's running the show. Somehow I doubt someone like that wants anything to do with salvation.
Eille: He's Messiah, now. Because he will lead us to Salvation. Once he obtains the power of God, he will create the utopia we all dream of. And all the terrible things we've done will be undone. So I will not allow you to kill him. I must atone!
Martin: Our main targets are the Saviours, don't get bogged down with their minions unless they force your hand, once their leaders fall down they will most likely break. Stay alive, group up whenever you can. And win.
Holiday: I am a defender. Meanwhile you appear to be a shallow mockery of justice and righteousness. Can you see through those radiant lights of yours? Compensating for your lack of substance? I was built in a garage by a fumbling idiot and I have more to me than you.
Viv: One chance. My name is Vivian Courthope. Run away now, or dying here is the most pleasant way you'll spend the afternoon.
Nitram: I do apologize but I must ask you to halt your actions against us. A being such as yourself must see the pointlessness of this world. Maybe they can hold on for a bit longer, but you must know that its a fruitless struggle. Rather then see these people die why not join me and bring a quick end to this fight? When I remake the world I'll even ensure you incarnate with a position of some authority.
Yoko: ...Which part's my Zach? I can't tell which... which part's my Zach?!
Iris: Great. So it's monster versus monster. I'll freeze this ugly mug in place so you guys can finish things!
Zach: ...you know, this is some kind of symbolism if there ever was one. Trapped in a black space. My movements controlled against me. Knowing I'm hurting someone that didn't deserve it. I was always really afraid. Really worried that I wouldn't be able to stop myself if that ever happened. That I'd wake up and I'd have torn someone apart, and it'd be one of my friends or even worse, Yoko. But you know, this showed me something... I have friends. I have family. I have people out there that would fight for me. And you don't.
Mial: We're just witnessing one guy's ego clash with another guy's ego, and a bunch of naive simpletons following after because they believe in a myth.
Viv: Also, you have me. He'll never see me coming. You're not a fighter, but neither is he. You're not a vicious bastard. I'm both. So you'll have plenty of time to figure out a way to beat his sociopathic "evil genius-wannabe" butt while I'm causing a lot of pain. ...are you gonna be real unhappy if he doesn't survive?
Nitram: Soon I shall eliminate all that which is unpure. All worlds which need a savior to constantly come to their aid! And there will be one perfect universe. Not perfect because it is flawless. But because it will be the only universe in existence. A world where every action matters. Where when someone is saved, they stay saved. And where eventually, it ends. Where there isn't an endless amount of poor lost souls constantly begging for help, crying out for someone to come to their rescue! Where there's a point to it all. Don't tell me there isn't some part of you that longs for that?
Holiday: You've ventured outside your sliver of reality and lost your mind. It's too much. For anyone. It's not your responsibility. These other worlds? They're events. Possibilities that you shouldn't even think about. Is it an ant's right to demolish a planet, simply because it can't comprehend it? Simply because it wants everything to be unified under its own vision? If you can honestly say yes, then I think you're missing the point yourself.
Marcus: I do not give a single damn, Messiah. Martin, I don't care who did what in that big-ass old multiverse out there. I don't give a damn. What I do care about...is dealing out the pain on you for starting this war...for those lame-ass reasons!!
Mial: I didn't expect Mason and the worse half of my least favorite ally to end up being the ones to make it up here. Half expected to see someone...functional.
Ryuu: You know, talking to a fanatic was always a waste of time.
Mahvash: We'd be extinct if that was our weakness. Being wrong is deadly but it happened. Alot.
Martin: You're Nurse Hello, can I get an autograph?!

  • Short Synopsis: Super City has the dismal reputation of having endured three otherworldy invasions in three years. They're prepared to fight. But what will be the cost?
  • First Post: 1 February 2020
  • Webcomic Time: 4 September 2021

Tropes — Caution, unmarked spoilers

  • All for Nothing: Martin loses his memories and three years of his life for a final shot at Messiah. Not only does it not work, but Marcus immediately follows it up with a lethal blow he was trying to avoid. He probably though this was just as the Saviors would have done.
  • All Your Base Are Belong to Us: The Saviors don't conquer the Foundation HQ with boots on the ground. They've already blown it away. The heroes are set up with whatever they can salvage in the old university. It turns out that they only got 3 days to recover.
  • Blood Knight: Hcaz is as giddy as Holiday.
  • Death Is Dramatic: Averted. Marcus takes down Nitram with a sucker punch after the dramatic clash between Martin and Nitram had left the latter distracted.
  • Driven to Suicide: Holiday, in a disturbing moment that none can tell if its corrupted programming or a built in kill switch or just what she wanted to do at that moment.
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: The Combined Zach monstrosity / "Perfect Zach" goes completely insane and starts destroying the entire city around him, and Cole is just swatted out of the way. Wilma then shows up with a vial of auspicious blood, and drinking it gives Cole his "Sage" upgrade. He then turns the tides — literally — on Perfect Zach.
  • Enemy Mine: AntiSaint joins the Foundation in repelling Nitram's invasion. He dies in the battle.
  • Reincarnation: Mahvash assists Vivian with a very rapid one. As it involved Mahvash, it was far from normal, but Vivian did get flesh and bone again [[as she asked]]. She Came Back Strong.
  • Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Mason does this too himself before inviting Viv to join him in storming Mial's airship.
  • He's Back!: Mikael, Ellie, and squads of demons from Warpath join the battle and turn several engagements.
  • Hijacking Cthulhu: Cain bit and transformed an archangel.
  • Just Between You and Me: Mahvash at least entertains Nitram's offer long enough to hear his plan.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Mial seems to have scaled up his mechanical talents, involving an ever-escalating Thopter Armada, and throwing more or less everything into a fight with Mason.
  • Literally Shattered Lives:
    • During his last charge, AntiSaint is Taken for Granite mid-attack and falls to his death—if he wasn't dead already, shattering against the concrete.
    • Messiah follows him shortly after — due to Martin burning both of them out pretty significantly, Messiah never saw Marcus coming...and is promptly "kicked into a million pieces" by Marcus. Either this or Ludicrous Gibs.
  • Monster Threat Expiration: Nitram's copy ability would have served him well in the final fights with everyone in his face but he seemed to have forgotten about it. Likewise, the Saviors show few of the advanced abilities that let them overwhelm the heroes in their dimension...
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Marcus gains some psychic abilities and Cole becomes a sage after getting a vial from Wilma.
  • No Endor Holocaust: Averted but it took a conveniently rapid evacuation.
  • Nuke 'em: Nitram says one word. Burn. And then kaboom.
  • Power at a Price: Martin tries to dump his memories into Nitram in a last-ditch attempt to break his resolve. And at the cost of Martin's own memories... it doesn't work.
  • Self-Destructive Charge: Holiday isn't done trying to CRUSH NITRAM INTO PULP! even when her skin melts off and pieces start falling away.
  • Sequel Hook: A hidden player emerges before the war even begins and gives some mysterious aid to Warpath on the battlefield. His stuff is labeled "L.L." Firebrand also picks up an archangel. And before leaving, Ignis alludes to Tyson, Cole's son.
  • Ship Tease: Between Nariko and Marky. She asks him to spend the time together.
  • Shout-Out: Viv's opening line to the mooks on Mial's ship is one to Captain America's short offer to the HYDRA mooks in the elevator.
  • Spirited Competitor: Not just Mahvash this time. Holiday is positively giddy to get down to things. She punches out a window. From across the room. All from the power of excitement. Viv eventually joins the club too.
  • Strategy Versus Tactics: Mahvash is well aware that stopping Nitram's invasion is not actually winning and spends as much time, making sure her IW come out intact — including reputations, looking out for the villains (though she overlooked Firebrand), and planning for this postwar period.
  • Tactical Withdrawal: Martin shows he picked up some pragmatism and, rather than try and defend everything, opted to save his strength for the big fight and then address the collapse of Super City's social order.
  • You Will Be Assimilated: Zach gets swallowed up into Hcaz and they form a kaiju that rampages across the battlefield. All in front of Yoko's eyes.
  • Watching Troy Burn: As mentioned, the heroes can't take back the streets and stay at maximum readiness to stop Nitram's invasion. They just aren't given enough time.
  • We Can Rule Together: An offer Nitram gives to all the defenders. They all blow him off except Mahvash who asks for details... and gets them interestingly enough.
