Recap / My Little Pony: Make Your Mark: S5 E2 "Family Trees Pt. 1"

Go To

Misty dreams about her past in Bridlewood, leading the ponies to make a discovery about Bridlewood's wishing tree.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Truth: Misty's made up backstory from "The Traditional Unicorn Sleep-Over" turns out to have been unwittingly true as it's revealed she was originally from Bridlewood.
  • Bigger on the Inside: The Night Market, the Breezies' marketplace, is housed entirely within the Wishing Tree but stretches for huge distances in all three dimensions.
  • The Bus Came Back: The Breezies make a return to the franchise, with their last major appearance being in the fourth season episode "It Ain't Easy Being Breezies" of Friendship is Magic.
  • Call-Back:
    • Hitch mentions that Sparky is still feeling drained after Opaline took his fire magic back in "Missing the Mark".
    • Misty refers to the sleepover she attended back in "The Traditional Unicorn Sleepover".
  • Clarke's Third Law: The Breezies think that Pipp's phone is some kind of magic they've never seen before.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Some of the Breezies become positively entranced by Pipp's phone and get into a fight over it. She tells Zipp that they started crying when she tried to take it away from them and worries that they may have become addicted to it. Zipp just smiles and rolls her eyes at Pipp's failure to see how strongly the Breezies' phone/social media issues mirror her own.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The Bridlewood playground, last seen in A New Generation makes a brief appearance.
    • Glowpaz, a jewel first shown in the Friendship is Magic episode "Daring Done?" is briefly mentioned.
  • Evolving Credits: The intro now shows Misty wearing her new mane/tail colors, appearing happier and more confident next to Opaline, and joining the Mane Five in the lineup at the title card.
  • Foreshadowing: When Queen Haven asks why Alphabittle is so intent on staying in Bridlewood, he replies that he has to stay "in case" without elaborating. He and Misty also have their cutie marks glow inexplicably at the same time.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: A Lighter and Softer example. When Zipp starts to get a bit too aggressive in her questioning of Misty, Sunny tells her to take it easy because of what Misty's been through.
  • It Only Works Once: A Breezie gives Misty a key which will take her to wherever her heart desires, but only once.
  • Laughing at Your Own Jokes: Sunny laughs at her remark that the fruits at the Breezie's night market aren't "out of this world", but rather "inside this tree!"
  • Levitating Lotus Position: Pipp briefly meditates, flapping her wings so she hovers in midair.
  • Motor Mouth: Breezies speak pony language, just so rapidly that it can only be understood by Hitch or by recording it and then playing it back at a slower speed.
  • Missed Him by That Much: Misty wanders off at the Night Market just before Alphabittle and Queen Haven cross paths with Sunny and the others.
  • Musical Nod: Izzy's junk music box plays the first few notes of the Friendship is Magic theme when she spins it.
  • Not the Intended Use: Alphabittle offers a cup of tea to a Breezie, who dives in and relaxes as if it were a hot tub.
  • Offscreen Crash: Happens when Izzy rides the slide at the Bridlewood playground and accidentally launches herself off the end.
  • Oh, My Gods!: At one point Misty says, "Thank moons!" This is apparently a common phrase among the unicorns of Bridlewood, and Izzy congratulates her for picking up the local slang.
  • Sleeping Dummy: Misty grabs a pile of stuff from her room in Opaline's castle and tosses it onto her bed as a makeshift dummy before heading out to meet her friends.
