Recap / My Little Pony: Make Your Mark: S2 E5 "The Cutie Mark Mix-Up"

Go To

Opaline hatches a plot to steal the power of the Brighthouse, while Sunny and Hitch have their personalities swapped by Sparky.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Pun: Zipp makes one after learning that Sunny and Hitch switched cutie marks.
Zipp: I'll get to the bottom of it. (holds in laughter)
  • Added Alliterative Appeal:
    • Sunny describes the community garden as a place to "grow fresh foods, foster friendships, and have fun in the fields."
    • The three types of pony magic are referred to as "Float" (Unicorn), "Flight" (Pegasus) and "Flora" (Earth pony).
  • The Beastmaster: Subverted. When Hitch has trouble wrangling the animals, Zipp points out he has the power to speak to and understand them. Hitch immediately counters that it doesn't mean the animals will automatically obey him. They do eventually, but only after they've had a while to act out.
  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Dahlia prefers her smoothies to be "chunky".
  • Call-Back:
    • After gaining Hitch's personality, Sunny calls out a pony for littering, just as Hitch in A New Generation.
    • Seashell tells Sunny about a book she's reading that describes the Tree of Harmony in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.
    • After reconciling, Sunny and Hitch perform their Secret Handshake from the movie.
  • The Cameo: Posey makes a brief appearance during the opening of the community garden.
  • Eek, a Mouse!!: Pipp keeps getting freaked out by winged mice following her.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: Sparky is instinctively drawn to Opaline's magic mouse.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Nopony notices that one of the animals happens to be a pink, see-through mouse.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Izzy keeps loudly interrupting Hitch's speech - to tell everypony else not to interrupt him.
  • Kick the Dog: Misty briefly entertains the idea of keeping the magic mouse as a pet, only for Opaline to callously zap it out of existence right in front of her.
  • Motivational Lie: Zipp sets Sunny and Hitch's reconciliation in motion by claiming to each one in turn that the other is in trouble.
  • Perfectly Cromulent Word: Izzy says she can't "belizzle" her eyes as the spooked animals stampede.
  • Personality Swap: As Sunny and Hitch argue that they don't appreciate how hard the other has it, Sparky's dragon fire sneeze causes them to swap Cutie Marks, and with them their personality traits. Zipp is able to switch them back by getting the two to reconcile.
  • Slave to PR: While arguing over whose has the toughest responsibilities, both Sunny and Hitch point out that their positions require them to not make any mistakes in front of others.
  • Swapped Roles: With their personalities switched, Sunny and Hitch decide to also switch jobs. Both realize the other has it harder than they thought, especially since neither has the actual skills necessary to perform the other's job (Hitch isn't familiar with Sunny's customers and can't improvise, and Sunny doesn't inherit his Speaks Fluent Animal power so the animals are even less inclined to obey her).
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The ponies running into the community garden unintentionally sets off a critter stampede.
  • Virtue Is Weakness: When Misty finds the artificial mouse Opaline conjures up cute, Opaline coldly tells her not to get attached, as it is a sign of weakness.
