A Pinkie Pie Story That Pinkie Pie Kinda Sorta Remembers
- Story by Katie Cook, Art by Andy Price
Pinkie Pie races to Rarity's boutique, itching to make a book for a friend as a present. Pinkie Pie suggests the story of "The Princess's New Dress". Rarity used to have the book until an accidental explosion by Sweetie Belle destroyed it, but she knows the story well enough to help out. But when Rarity asks what type of art style Pinkie would like to use, Pinkie is undecided, and suggests they try them all, much to Rarity's disbelief.
They start working on the book, doing a few pages at a time with a different style, with Pinkie going for the more wacky, and Rarity for the well-refined. Pinkie's lack of logic leads to Rarity losing her sanity more and more, but they finally happen to complete the story in their mishmash of styles. When Rarity asks who the book is for, Pinkie tells her its for her, to replace the one Sweetie Belle destroyed, and while it's not as professional as a published book, the fact they worked on it together should make it mean much more. Rarity is touched by her generosity, and the two head out for BFF smoothies.
Tropes appearing in this issue:
- Art Shift: Everywhere from Pinkie's crude crayon drawings to Rarity's detailed works, Looney Tunes, Peanuts, Roy Lichtenstein, crochet dolls, plasticine models and fruit!
- Creator Cameo: The colored pencil set is named after Heather Breckel, the series' normal colorist.
- Epic Fail: Rarity lost her old copy of the book, because Sweetie Belle was playing with her chemistry set to get her cutie mark in thermodynamics.
- Evil Eyebrows: Rarity alludes to this trope in how she draws the weaver of the story.
- Hammerspace: Rarity is able to store a huge Roy Lichtenstein style painting in her wardrobe.
- Furry Reminder: The story doesn't end with the princess's humiliation, since ponies don't normally wear clothes.
- I Need a Freaking Drink: Rarity reaches for the antacids the moment Pinkie starts getting really creative.
- Idea Bulb: Pinkie Pie has hers drawn on a poster that she holds over her head (Rarity really wishes she'd stop getting ideas).
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: It's a comic with Pinkie Pie. This is par for the course (though Rarity gets into it as well by giving exasperated looks and writing notes to the audience).
- Medium Blending: At one point Pinkie and Rarity make figures out of wool and clay. Real life wool and clay. Even the fruit used is just real fruit with wax eyes put on them.
- My Little Phony: In Rarity's room is a poster for "My Tiny Gecko".
- Sarcasm-Blind: Pinkie Pie misses all of Rarity's left-hooved complements completely.
- Self-Insert Fic: Rarity's version starts with her as the heroine of the story, but Pinkie modifies it to make it her as the heroine and Rarity as the cunning weaver.
- Shout-Out:
- The comic story is based on The Emperor's New Clothes.
- In Rarity's room before Sweetie Belle destroys it, are a book called ""How I Did It" by V. Frankenstein", a poster of a ponified Elvis Presley, and an "I Want to Believe" poster.
- Pinkie starts her story with "A long long time ago in a city far away...". Rarity nixes this and insists it must start "Once Upon a Time".
