Recap / Monster Rancher S3 E4: Saved by a Hare

Go To

Tiger's back... but having been freshly reborn from a Mystery Disc means he's lost his fighting techniques. Meanwhile, Durahan unleashes Zebra Saurian to defeat the heroes and steal Moo's soul.

As the gang journeys to the site of the Mandy Cup, they bump into a pair of familiar faces- Daton and Datonaire, two members of Tiger's old pack! After they were released from their Discs, the two set out on their own, and are happy to rejoin their leader. To help the gang, they show them an orchard full of mangos, but when Tiger tries to steal from it, he falls into a trap… set up by Hare! Hare is now helping the orchard's owner, a young girl named Tama, and while he would like to rejoin the Searchers, he's worried over what might happen to Tama on her own.

Will Hare choose his new friend or his old ones? And can they defeat Zebra Saurian?

This episode contains examples of:

  • Bad Liar: Hare struggles with this after the Searchers leave, trying to put on a brave face for Tama and insist that he's perfectly fine despite her already suspecting that he's torn between his conflicting loyalties.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Hare arrives just in time to save Holly after she's taken hostage; Tiger comments on his tendency to make dramatic entrances.
  • Break the Haughty: Tiger discovers that being temporarily sealed into a Mystery Disc has left him with only his most basic abilities, putting him on the same level as Mocchi. He then winds up falling into one of Hare's pit traps while trying to steal from Tama's orchard.
  • Call-Back: Tiger falls into a pit trap that has a taunting doodle of Hare, just like he did in Hare's debut episode.
  • Calling Your Attacks:
    • Tiger discovers the hard way that doing this isn't enough; no matter how many times he calls for his Lightning and Blizzard attacks, they simply won't manifest.
    • Exploited later; Hare suggests that he switch up his fighting style and keep his opponents guessing by falsely announcing the moves he can't use and replacing them with others. Tiger angrily rejects the idea at first, but then puts it to good use against the Zebra Saurians.
  • Deadpan Snarker: When Tiger continues to insist that they don't need Hare to join them because he's just as strong as he ever was, Suezo comments "One blizzard, hold the ice."
  • Death Glare: After hearing about how stray monsters kept stealing from Tama's orchard, most of the Searchers fix Tiger, Daton and Datonaire with a withering glare over having planned on doing the same.
  • De-power: Tiger learns that, just like Mocchi, he's lost most of his old abilities and will have to relearn those techniques all over again. The same applies to Daton and Datonaire.
  • Determined Homesteader: Tama's parents left her the orchard, and she struggled to keep it running all on her own before Hare arrived.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • Tiger's former packmates allude to how they were recently revived, much like Tiger himself. This also means that just like him, they were Brought Down to Normal and can't use most of their former abilities — something Tiger doesn't realize until after the Zebra Saurians attack.
    • Before the Searchers leave Tama's farm, Hare whispers some advice to Tiger that he angrily rejects, only to put it to use during while fighting the baddies later: faking out his opponents by falsely calling his attacks to throw them off.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: Hare grapples with his desire to rejoin his friends versus staying with Tama and ensuring things continue to run smoothly at the orchard. This conflict only grows worse after he spots the Zebra Saurians and realizes the baddies are about to ambush the other Searchers.
  • Genre Savvy: Though the Searchers avoid the subject matter, Tama quickly deduces that they wanted to ask Hare to rejoin them, and that he wants to be with his friends. She tries to force the matter out into the open, only for it to backfire, leaving Hare convinced that he can't leave her.
  • Glad I Thought of It: Comic variation; while Tiger freely admits that Hare was the one who came up with the idea of announcing different techniques from what he's actually using, he makes a big scene out of rejecting the suggestion when it's first made, only to brag about it after putting it to use. Suezo immediately Lampshades the hypocrisy.
  • Iconic Item: When he decides to rejoin the others, Hare leaves his bandana behind with Tama. She catches up with them later and returns it, calling him out for leaving it behind in lieu of a goodbye.
  • Irony: Daton and Datonaire ran away from the human who unlocked them in order to continue living as strays, insisting this is in their nature. By the end of this episode, they decide to stay with Tama instead and help keep the orchard safe.
  • Megaton Punch: Tama does this several times when annoyed.
  • Mirror Character: Tama's the exact same age as Genki (eleven), around the exact same height (though she accuses him of being too short for his age) and shares the same sort of stubborn Determinator spirit.
  • Not Me This Time: Played With; while Daton and Datonaire had every intention of stealing from Tama's orchard, they point out that they only just arrived in the area shortly before Tiger and the rest of the Searchers did, and thus weren't actually among the strays that gave Tama so much trouble before.
  • Tempting Fate: Tiger scoffs at the thought that he might be in the same position as Mocchi, and attempts to show off his favorite attacks, only to realize that he can't summon lightning or blizzards anymore.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: When she catches up with them, Tama calls Hare out for leaving his bandana behind instead of telling her what was happening and saying goodbye directly.
